Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - fixed gear front wheel

im new and ignorant. but i was looking at harris gallery for fixed gears, and they were selling front hubs for fixed gears. are there special hubs that are needed for front as well as rear? Thanks

no but people are picky about matching hubs and so forth. if you are actually racing on the track the front needs to be bolt on (but you can get bolt on skewers as well).

as long as it's 100mm, any front hub will do fine. it's sorta the norm to go with a matching set, but it doesn't really matter as far as functionality. track or road won't make a difference.

If you can get just a rear for cheap, I recommend that. Every bike shop has a back room with dozens on old 700c wheels that they'll sell you for $30. It won't match, but it's an easy way to save money on your bike.

My wheels don't match. The rear is a formula hub, and the front is a Shimano 105. I went cheapy; needed a new front wheel after thrashing the last one, and bought the least expensive wheel they had (that I found acceptable) at the shop.

heh. i've used 105 wheels for years. they're the secret to getting a really good, cheap, reliable front wheel. smooth and well-sealed.

Do whatever you want, just make sure you get a proper reverse-threaded front wheel lockring.

I remember a discussion regarding front hubs a while back on here, I thought someone metioned they thought road fronts tend to be lighter, how much truth there is in that I dont know. Theres nothing wrong with riding a road front at all.

It's not a tarckbike, it's a conversion. So I'm safe. Conversions don't explode, they just rattle to bits eventually.
