Classic & Vintage - What does the 'U' in Peugeot nomenclature stand for?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Yeah I know, an esoteric question at best. I only thought of it because I was looking through the Peugeot catalogs so generously posted by one of our forum members and came across something like a UX-10E in a little sidebar next to the PX-10E that said it was the same as the PX-10 but with 27x1 1/4" wheels/tires. So I stated thinking, is the 'U' in the UO's and this UX-10E for "US" market perhaps to indicate the 27" wheels? My brain works in mysterious ways. I'll probably forget to take trash out while I'm contemplating this. :)

The U doesn't stand for U.S. The U prefix was used on Canadian Peugeots too.
Maybe it stands for unreal...:)

Peugeots have their flaws I admit, but they are definitely not ugly. The lug work and brazing sometimes is though...:)

How about this possibility:

U = utilité
P = professionnel

Could be 'unpainted'. Most of 'em I've had came with just a coat of whitewash.

Its hard to say... French Peugeots used '8' to designat their entry level models...P8, PX8, P8E etc. The 'U' designation was not only a North American designation but also Japanese.

Hmmm...seems sort of reasonable. Best answer so far :)

U more or less is for 27" wheels. If you look through the literature you find only 1 listing for a 'U' bike on the Dutch catalog site...it has 27" wheels. Whats the '74 PX10 with 27" wheels called? UX-10.

Hmmm...something else to add to my site!!!

Yeah that's what I was figuring but I don't see how a U = 27" in French. I like the U = utilité theory but then I suspect there are beaucoup utility bikes all over France with 700C wheels. Who knows?

And then we'd have to speculate what the 'O' stands for... ;)

Of course it could be like Z28 which meant absolutley nothing, it just happened to be the next free option code available on the forms.

Exactly...

Keep in mind its U oh 8 not U zero 8

Almost everyone botches the Z06 by calling it Z OH 6. Its Z Zero 6 or Z6.
