Touring - Used BOTH panniers and trailer AT ONCE?

I've seen a lot of panniers VS. trailers, but why not both? Has anyone tried this?

Has anyone tried this? I'd like to do a bit of touring with a much weaker rider. If I could carry most/all of the equipment, then we could travel a bit faster and more safely.

We would be traveling on roads, so bumps are less of a problem. I'm 180 lbs on a stock Novara Randonee--are there going to be problems with my rear wheel in such a setup?

If you know of any photos/anecdotes on the interwebs of such a setup, please let me know.

I saw a post either here or on CGOAB by a guy hauling 250lbs of equipment on a pannier+trailer combination. I would think you'd need an ultra-strong (40 spoke?) wheel to do such a thing though.

This guy did it. He had about 100 kg in total I believe.

It would depend on how the weight is distributed. If you don't overload the rear of the bike, you will likely be fine. Put more weight in the front panniers than on the rear rack and panniers. The weight on the trailer won't stress the rear wheel much.

I saw a guy on a fairly good climb in Yellowstone hauling his stuff and most of his companion's stuff. He seemed to be doing fine, but I would hate to carry that much if in the mountains. It can work if you are willing to make it work, but it will be a grind if you aren't in flat country.

I would advise packing as light as you can and maybe letting the weaker rider carry a bit once they have been on the road a while, if the trip is long enough for them to get into shape as they go.

You can do anything that you want to do. My advice would be that you need to begin getting specific about just how much space/weight you need. Maybe a trailer would be enough. From what I have seen, some trailers can carry plenty of stuff for two people. Your partner will certainly want to carry a handle bar bag or a rack bag at a minimum so they have easy access to sunglasses, camera, wallet, etc. Good luck.

Yes, I've ridden thousands of miles with panniers and a trailer. I've got a set of four Ortlieb roll-ups with a crossbag. I hauled two-year old twins in a Schwinn baby trailer for 4500 miles, then rode another couple thousand with a Bob. No complaints, once I got some strong wheels.
