Hi All,

I am considering buying a used Trek 5000 OCLV Carbon bike. I don't really know a lot about it except that the seller says it is 'awesome shape'. I did a little research on the web and it looks like this is a pretty good bike. Asking price is around $9oo. Do you guys think this is reasonable? and is this a good bike? I am a biker who likes to go fast on the bike paths in our city and will ride 3 to 5 times a week during the spring, summer, and fall, 10 to 12 miles at a time. Thanks for any input.

That is a nice bike...its value depends on its age and condition. Take it to a Trek dealer and have the fork and frame carefully inspected for cracks. Get a written estimate of the cost of having the bike put into good riding condition and getting the wheels trued.

Also, make sure the bike is YOUR size. People often buy frames that are too small, and try to "fix" the bike by raising the saddle and stem...you get a much better fit by buying the a frame that is tall enough to start with.

Thanks for your feedback. It is 56cm so it is my size. I just found out that it is a 1998. As it is 10 years old, assuming it has no cracks and only needs a light tune up, do you still think this is a good bike and that $875 is a fair price. Thanks again in advance for any feedback.

I think $875 is too much for a 10-Year old OCLV 5000. If the bike is in excellent shape, then around $700 is a decent price.

I've been keeping my eyes on craigs list for the past month looking for a bike for my son. That's not a great deal. I saw one recently with full ultegra (or whatever is was called ten years ago, 6600?) and it was only 4 or $500.00 and allegedly in very good shape.

I went and looked at it last night. It is in very, very good shape and has a carbon Spinergy wheel set, and Shimano 105/600 components. I fell in love with it but while talking to the seller, he became unsure of whether he wanted to sell or not so he backed out to take time to think about it. Now that I may not be able to have it, I want it more than ever. I feel impulsive now and am obsessed with the bike. Am I an idiot?

I have never owned a really nice bike let alone a carbon fiber bike. Seems like any comparable bike for sale with those kind of parts costs at least two grand.

I did find another bike, a Fuji Track Pro '05 56cm for $600. Anyone have any opinions on that bike?
