General Cycling Discussion - The best riding music...

Hey all,

I`m sure this thread has been done to death but I thought I`d share the top 5 records I`ve got in my ipod that makes me ride hard:

1. Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped (an excellent record, a little more pop that crazy experimental noise but really good for riding around in a state of happy bliss)

2. Ween - Shinola Vol. 1 (probably not the best record to listen to if you`ve never listened to Ween before but currently my favorite. Stand out track: Gabrielle)

3. The Roots - Phrenology (IMHO the best hip hop record ever. Super duper funky beats make for fun riding)

4. Justice - Cross (New school electronic fun. Super heavy four on the floor dance beats make this a good record for going fast. The track D.A.N.C.E. is simply awesome!)

5. The Golden Dogs - Big Eye Little Eye (a fantastic rock record that`s fun for rush hour car dodging, here in Winnipeg with our 4th season, construction season...also known as summer to the rest of you, the track Construction Worker really has added meaning. One of the lines - Construction worker...when will it be done?)

Those are my top 5 right now but I`m always changing around what I listen to, how about you guys?

I find it too dangerous to listen to music while riding. Also illegal.

I suppose if you have your music blaring at full blast it would be dangerous, but at a `normal` level you can still hear everything just fine.
As far as being illegal, well...if a cager listens to music and talks on a cell phone while drinking a double latte and stuffing a donut in their mouth and not have the fuzz come down on them, well, I don`t think they`ll give me much trouble with my ipod. At least they haven`t yet, and I`ve had cops pull up to me at a stop sign, give me a wave or a nod and drive off, and not once did I try to hide the fact that I was listening to tunes. Besides it`s not like I`m smuggling crack in my down tube. However, to each their own I suppose.:)

I usually listen to hard rock/ metal when I ride. I need the heavy guitar riffs when I tackle the hills going to and from work. I don't crank the volume and I have never had a cop say anything to me (yet).

There is a dj in Ca. I think that creates various mixes at different tempos.

Anything by Linkin Park, but only when I'm on the greenway by my apartment. On the street, nothing. That's a sure way to get splattered around here (although it seems like I see a lot of bike messengers listening to their iPods sometimes).

I don't listen to music while I ride but I love listening to Bossa Nova while working on a bike in the garage. A bottle of Newcastles would be nice too...

Oh no. Another listening to music vs. not listening to music debate. :eek:

I usually queue up a bunch of NPR podcasts: This American Life, Marketplace, Forum, etc. I almost always keep only one earbud in while I ride so that I can keep an ear out for cars. I'm in the market for one of those molded inner earbuds right now...wind noise is really distracting with my current set.

I was going up a large, steep, 4 mile long hill the other day while listening to Freebird. It was epic to say the least.

The music i listen to all depends on the mood i'm in + how i'm riding. if i'm doing the road thing, and i really want to do well, i don't listen to any music at all. helps me concentrate on my body, and lets me listen to the sounds of the bike + the whistle of the rubber on the road (inspires me, i guess).

Heavy Rock (like... BoySetsFire, Sum 41, Linkin Park, Nine Inch Nails)
Scaa (like... The Beautiful Girls, Slightly Stoopid, Sublime)
Electronic (like... DJ Irish, Kevin Energy, or w.e. else i feel like)

if you're into hard trance, DJ Irish is a good DJ. Go for the Assorted Hardtrance selections... my particular favs are 5 and 6.

I listen to such varied music.. Led Zepplin, Eagles, Bon Jovi, Orchestral Soundtracks, Folk, Irish, Parody.

I don't listen to music while riding, I'm not experienced enough and I'd also need better earphones. I do sing while riding though, yesterday while riding on a multi-use trail in one of my local parks I found myself riding towards a young couple while loudly singing "sexual healing"...I bet they had a nice laugh about it after I rapidly rode away in shame. If I was listening to music I'd probably be listening to Led Zeppelin, they make up about 75% of my mp3 player.

singing whilst biking? you're not pedaling hard enough! you should out of breath with sweat dripping down your face, even though everyone around you is wearing their jackets!

I bought and broke (intentionally) the cheapest set i could find. mounted them to the helmets visor and listen that way.
