Classic & Vintage - peugot competition worth 200?

according to the seller it has
wienman brakes, peugeot components, 531 tubing, and its a 1980

I think the fork and stays are hi-ten, which is a negative. I would probably pass on it for that price.

Offer the seller $140-150. If he's willing to deal and you're close, go take a look. Similar Peugeots pop up on Ebay but you have to deal with shipping costs and it's difficult to get a feel for a bike when all you have to look at are a few photos. Is it the right size for you? Can you perform some basic tune up procedures? Be sure to check out the wheels to see what condition they're in.

That bike could easily go for $200 in many locations, I sold a nice later model "8" series Peugeot (Carbolite Tubing) for $150 just the other day.

I'd say it's worth it ... I have one, admittedly kitted out with a bunch of Nuovo Record which I had in the parts bin, but I love it ... solid rider, very responsive. But then, I happen to think any 531 bike in rideable condition, main frame tubes only or all-531, is worth that if it doesn't have rot or crash damage. As much as we C&Vers hate to admit it, that's where the "fair" prices start these days. there are still steals to be found (disclaimer: I nailed mine off of CL for twenty bucks ... ), and this isn't one of them, for sure. But it's still a fair price.

And +1 on the drillium chainrings ...

It's just slightly heavier than the Super Competition due to the high tensile fork and stays, but one member here says that he can't tell the difference in the ride. That Stronglight triple is very nice!

With the brake levers switched out to a pair w/o safety levers, and with the spoke-protector-plastic-disc currently on the real wheel removed, the bike would look nice.

I bought this Competition for $30. So I would so no.

I don't consider my bike a great deal. And I think the OP's prospective purchase is priced far to high.

You know, I have to weigh my time in the price and the old "bird in the hand" thing - if I'm looking for a bike, one sitting in front of me with a "For Sale" sign on it would be worth considerably more than a bike that might pop up on eBay some day. I think that bike is certainly worth $200. No knowledgeable seller sells a decent bike for $30. Those are those rare bargains like my Panasonic that I picked up at a pawn shop for $30. There's no way I could get it for that from a bike shop or eBay and probably not CL unless the seller was clueless.

I picked up a Peugeot Competition (PK10) on ebay a few years ago for $140 with shipping. It came with some nasty 27in steel wheels but those were thrown out immediately. The Competition is a damn fine bicycle that would be worth every bit of $200 to me.

$150-$200 seems like a fair price.

It is a fair, though not fantastic, price.

You must keep in mind many of us here on the board have multiple rides. We'll only buy something if it is a) really cheap or a great deal, and/or b) a really special and fantastic bike.

To most of this, this bike is neither. But it is a really nice ride and a good introduction to old bikes. The Pugs from that period look snappy and are darn fine riders.

i completely revamped the bike . it was in super poor condition .

the way it rides is great . but i dont have anything else to really compare it to.
but outtta the saddle rushes the bike performs for me and is quick and responsive .
i would gladly pay 200 USD for that Peugeot .

I sure as hell think my Peugeot PK10 is a special and fantastic bike. It rides beautifully- a perfect compromise between comfort and stiffness. Peugeot frames are also perfectly aligned at the factory- something that can't be said of many marques.

A (slightly higher end) '83 PSV-10 frameset + components and some generic 700C wheels netted me a complete, VG-cond Trek 610 in a less-then-recent local trade.
