Bicycle Mechanics - Klein Internal Cable Routing ....

I've got a 2000 Klein Quantum Race with internal cable routing, as they all do. In replacing the cables, I had a major fubar and let the nylon sleeve slip out of the frame on the top tube. I've been trying for 2 weeks to fish a new cable through the top tube and cannot seem to get it through.

PLEASE give me some tips, hints and suggestions.

I've tried:

dental floss and a shopvac
a new cable with a slightly bent tip
a new piece of nylon tubing
wire coat hanger...

HELP!!!

Hollywood Forgive me if any of these are too daft or obvious.

Have you tried threading from both ends? Sometimes it will go more easily one way than the other.

Try to run the cable inner through first (better chance to hit the hole) Then slide the housing over it.

Run a loop of thin wire or thread into the exit end hole and try to lassoo the cable or housing as it feeds through

Thanks Ed, I have tried from both ends - I've also tried to use a dental pick to help guide the cable in.


Other ideas?

I was running cables through a pair of BMX handlebars a while ago, and I found if I pushed the inner through as far as the hole I could reach in with a pair of tweezers and grab the end.

I'm not sure if any of this will help, but...

Klein's technical manual is available here. (http://prod.kleinbikes.com/assets/asset_upload_file589_1172.pdf) Instructions regarding internal cable routing are on page 48. They say to save the nylon sleeve for future installations. I'm assuming that it can be reinserted.

My Kestrel has internal cable routing, as well. Their instructions say:


Note: I you already removed the disposable housing before reading this section, don't panic! This is how we install the housing at the factory:

Put a 45 degree kink about three inches from the end of a piece of stiff wire (brazing rod if you have it, although a wire coat hanger will work) and thread it through the tob tube, watching at the far end of the tube. When you see the leading end of the wire line up with the hole in the top tube, twist the wire until the kinks pops through the hole. Then thread your housing over the wire.

O.k., finally got it back together. For the top tube, it took a Coat hanger with a couple of 45deg. bends in it and a flashlight to pseudo illuminate the inside of the tube. done - finito!

The downtubes were easy after that... I'm riding again!
