We are going to tour the US and need to get two tandem bikes. Look for a tandem around $1000 is there one that will work or do any of you all have any recommendation

Our starter was a 1985ish Santana we bought locally off cragislist. We paid $600 for it, and it was in excellent condition.
For $1000 you're likely to find something bit newer with index shifting (which was the one thing about the Santana I really didn't like - friction barcons).

We didn't want to spend very much money because I didn't think I'd like it. We had the bike a month and bought something brand new.

Good luck!

Two tandems. Interesting. Is this for two couples or a family of four? Pity you can't get a Quad bike for $2,000. Please keep us updated.

If you're located somewhere around SLC, UT, you might want to take a look at the Burley Duet that I'm re-homing. Just click the link in my signature.
