Road Cycling - Help!... need advice on used bike!

Hi all... I am in need of some advice. I am on the edge of buying a used Trek road bike for $750. This will be my first road bike and I am new to the sport (besides having a Specialized MTN bike). I need your knowledge for the price that is offered. I'll make this short as possible.

Specs:

Trek / year 2000 / 2300 Alpha series SLR

Look pedals PP 396

Bontrager neck

Selle seat

Shimano gears / brakes (Ultegra)

Cat eye computer w/ Cadence, speed & distance

Rolf Vector Comp wheels

Continental flat protection tires

Condition: On a scale from 1 - 10 I'd say 5. This bike has been down more than once and has multiple chips, scratches & road rash all over. Form what information I have do you think $750 is a deal? or to much? I would like to add that I have have my eye on a new 2003 Fuji Newest Al for a little less $$.

Offer 500 bucks or get the fuji.Heck i got a 03 felt SR71 i'm selling for 500 bucks,its like new.

I'd say $400, but only if the frame is straight. Is it the right frame size for you?

I think you can do a lot better, be patient.

Its a 60 cm and im just at 6'2. Although when I straddle the bike i do not get much clearance from the top post.

If you are spending money on a serious bike (who knows, 750.00 may be chump change to you) I would make sure it is the proper size.

Go to your LBS and look around, ask questions, get fitted, then do the same at another store until you are confident about your purchase. I would hate to see you spend decent money on a bike that does not fit. If the bike does not fit correctly it can hurt you.

For 750.00 there quite a few deals on e-bay, and year end models at you LBS, although you might not get above 105 (if that matters to you).

Hi,
more than anything else, you need a good fit. A good bike shop can do that.
There are several brands that offer good to very good bikes new at that price. Bike shops will also have used bikes from time to time. Spend some time trying bikes, learn what works for you. If you do that, you'll want to ride all the time. if it doesn't fit, or there's something wrong, it'll stay in the garage.

Okay, perhaps not crazy low (relative term, i did saved 300.00 off my cheapest LBS), but i did get an brand new 03 allez elite delivered to my door for $820.00

Don't go by their listing price, make an offer.
