interesting engineering here...
is there a performance issue this is tackling, or is it just cos it can be done? not that i'm opposed to the latter...this being the altbikes forum and all...just wondering.
I think it is for riding in deep snow.
Gets the derailleur up out of the way and may provide extra low gearing via the jackshaft/extra cog arrangement.
The bagdragger,,,that is where you put your bag to drag it with you.
This looks like an interesting concept, don't know as it would be better than just having studded tires. If'n I could read it, that would help.
peace
Studded are good for ice, but those look like they are for spreading your weight out over more area so you don't sink into the snow. I've seen similar setups used for the Iditabike. Its like a home-made Surley Large Marge.
Google (http://64.233.179.104/translate_c?hl=en&u=http://www.m-gineering.nl/artic.htm&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dm%2Bgineering%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26hs%3Dcoa) will translate it for you.
If you also paste the url into babelfish (http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/tr), between the two you can get a readable translation.
google language works relatively well, it is dutch.
via Google: I didn't put in the first sentance because it seemed translatable to me. special project for Marco is an Expedition,...or something like that. But from there...
"Marco wants with this bike cycling through Siberia, the Bering road, hopefully not too many polar bears encounter (Cyclists in Alaska called Meals-on-Wheels (TM)) and then decline to South America to re-warming. Because they are not in Siberia swept bicycle path is the idea of frozen rivers biking. Also, the Full bepakking by the snow cycling course special demands on the material. On this page is the progress of the project. And you can follow http://www.crossingcontinents.nl of Marco already has arrived in Siberia
Dual air
In order for the snow to get any wheel drive demontabele hulpvelgen. Just as with a tractor, but then two per wheel. Rim are not practical, so there are disc brakes on the bike.
The tyres are slightly smaller than the central, so there is still a hard surface acceptable steering arises.
another detail of the rims.
Trapas
If your whole wide wheels (160 mm) in the bike move, you will also need a broad onmundig bracket. Otherwise, the cranks can not go to the rear, and runs the chain by the band. This is 145 mm, and the bracketbus is also correspondingly broader. Under the photo to compare a normal. But it still is to double the air drive in two stages with a hulpas executed."
End of my google cutting & pasting & translating & cutting and Pasting quoting.
I dont remember where I saw it but a guy built a chopper bicycle with a car tire and rim on the rear.
