interesting engineering here...

is there a performance issue this is tackling, or is it just cos it can be done? not that i'm opposed to the latter...this being the altbikes forum and all...just wondering.

I think it is for riding in deep snow.

Gets the derailleur up out of the way and may provide extra low gearing via the jackshaft/extra cog arrangement.

The bagdragger,,,that is where you put your bag to drag it with you.
This looks like an interesting concept, don't know as it would be better than just having studded tires. If'n I could read it, that would help.

Studded are good for ice, but those look like they are for spreading your weight out over more area so you don't sink into the snow. I've seen similar setups used for the Iditabike. Its like a home-made Surley Large Marge.
