Mountain Biking - How much did you spend on your bike?

I was just wondering how much each of us has invested in our pride and joy. I know there are some who ride the X-Mart bikes and others (like me) that most people think are off our rockers for spending "THAT MUCH" on a bike.

The reason this comes to mind is the upcoming holiday season. My family always asks if I've been doing a lot of riding, and then someone will ask about how much of my $$$ I spend on my "hobby". I hate it when they call it a hobby, it's my SPORT!, and my stress reliever.

Anyways, I was just curious.

If you have more than one bike, choose your favorite, or your newest.

Also, enter what you paid, not what it's worth. For example, I bought my bike used, but if I had to replace it, It'd be over $4,000. Also, for you shop employees/owners, put down what you paid, not what MSRP was. If you bought your bike on closeout, put down what you paid, not original price.

Since all of our bikes are used (unless you haven't ridden it yet) they are all worth the used price for them, but some of the members here bought their bikes new, others used. What you paid for your bike is one question, but if you really want to know what our bikes are worth how much it would cost to build one up new is a better question.

I paid $1000 for mine as an almost new used bike 2 years ago. Probably only worth half that if I were to sell it now, but to me its priceless. :)

Well, I built mine. I got a much higher end bike for a much lower cost than an equivalent bike would have cost directly from a dealer. I think I spent about 1600 for it, but it has some pretty high end stuff on it. Who knows what it's worth in terms of used value.

I have a Specialized bighit comp with a few alterations

Stock bike=$3200 new mine $1750 perfect second hand.
Tires=$110
BlackSpire DH chainring=$70
Aireal Chain Device=$189
Azonic Shorty Stem=$150

This makes my bike about $3719 new but mine is only $2269 all this is in Australian Dollars, so divide it by abou 0.7 and that;'s how many American Dollars.

Also looking at new forks so add another $1000-$1500 for that later.

Never really thought about it but everything starts to add up, considering I'm only 14 and have no job.

my schwinn moab from the frame up cost about $700 everything but the frame and wheels were bought used.

including taxes, i spent about $1170 CAD on my 02’ fisher tassajara disc (bought it new this past august) and about $1050 CAD for my norco fluid 3 (bought this past october off ebay)... the cost of the fluid is slowing going up though as i get parts for upgrade.

My bike (02 RM Trailhead) retailed for 1K CDN, got it for 800 end of season. Since then I've spent about 400 CDN on upgrades (clipless peddles, RF Next crankset). Thus, I have 1200 in it so far. I'm likely going to spend another 600 this winter on upgrades/replacement parts (Marz MX Comp Air fork, new drivetrain bits, new stem, new seat...).

1500 to 2500 including custom parts...at this point, money invested, my ht is worth more than my dually :)

'02 Specialized Hardrock UNO (FS) - $250.00 used in a pawn shop. Got a '96 Specialized Hardrock GX Sport HT rigid forK for commuting for $75.00 from a pawn shop as well.

I don't feel like I spent too much on my bike, but if I had replace it, I would end up spending way more than I would like. I got a good deal on an '03 FSR Stumpjumper Comp for $1,500 and there is nothing major I want to change on it. On the other hand, if I went out to buy a bike today I would end up spending at least $2,500 probably closer to $3,500. If I would just ride and not look at the new stuff that comes out, I would be happier and spend a lot less.

Too much. But I don't regret a single penny of it. I love my bikes!

I'm still buying parts for my titus switchblade frame so I checked the $1500+ box, but at this point I've spent just under $2000 and I still need to buy the brakes.
Thank goodness christmas is coming, all I'm asking for is $$$ toward the purchase of bike parts.
I spent $350 on my Trek HT in '01 and it's still all stock parts except tires. Great bike and nothing has broken on it!

i don't really like talking about bike prices too much with people who don't know anything about bikes. i just don't like saying a price tag on things since people will get misconceptions. i do like saying my bike is worth more than my car though.

My bike and bike related spending so far this lifetime has only been around $5K.

Spending on my current mountain bike to date has been around $1000. $750 for the bike (nice deal, retailed for $1000), $100 for the pedals, and another $150 or so on the miscellaneous bits and pieces (seat bag, computer, pump, tubes etc). Add on clothing, tools, shoes etc and the number grows a fair bit. I can see a good outlay happening next season - new tires are definitely in order as is a better saddle, plus an upgrade to discs or better rim brakes, and maybe a new fork if I get overly excited....

The commuter is a reasonably cheap bike, but the bits and bobs attached to it certainly add up. Lights, locks, racks, bags etc... I think there's about $1000 in that so far over about 6 years.

Road bikes are a different story... about to drop $4500+ on a pair of new bikes - one for me, one for my wife. Don't you love supportive marriages? She's actually convincing me to spend extra money to get the Campy equipped bike... :D

a2, you're right - it's more than just a hobby. It is my sport, my passion, and a major part of my lifestyle. If I had to drive every day to work when I'm in town, I'd go nuts - I hate being stuck traffic hearing my money go down the drain and my bike time being wasted as the car sits there and the engine just idles! If I didn't hit a trail on the weekends or go for a nice 50+ mile road ride, I'd feel empty. The best part is my wife feels the same way.

Hobbies keep you entertained. Cycling keeps me fit and healthy and helps me enjoy life to it's fullest. Your post made me think: sure it's cost a bit over the years, but it's been more than worth every penny.

'02 FSRXC, $1600CAD, but, won a $1100CAD bike, traded for a store credit, sold the same credit for a horse, sold the horse to Alpo, took the money to shop B, took the $500 I got for the Raleigh, plus a wad from my sock drawer, and bought that previously mentioned FSRXC.
I took the Raleigh Frame, and a bunch of parts laying round, and sold that for $350CAD, now if My math is right, I spent, er? Ok I think I got a deal, don't you?
Just bought a Un-used C'dale R800 For $940 CAD, But thats another Forum entirely.

About 850 for my Bianchi through employee purchase, which retails for 2000. My Rocky Mountain has costed about 1000 so far, its the Pipeline, with SRAM X.9, Hayes Hydros, XTR DH cranks, most of the parts I got through employee purchase. I'm thinking of selling it and getting a Bullit or Banshee Chapparal.

Wow, Crashing SUx has a Nucleon, I have never met anyone with one. Those are some pretty crazy ass bikes. Wish I could afford one.

The affording part actually worked out really well for me. I'd been looking at them for a long time but they are just too expensive. I ended up having my Big Hit stolen this summer and the insurance money was more than what I paid for the Nucleon. It all turned out pretty well in the end.

All these upgrades were because the stock parts broke. Eh, I love my bike the way it is now. :)

On my Dh rig I have about $3400 invested (so far).

Last spring I went through the parts bins in various storage areas around the place and put a bunch of it up for sale on the net. I did some swapping and selling and even a little buying, and somehow ended up with a Cove Stiffee frame. I had to buy a few things to build it up, and most of those were clearance items or stuff I bought cheap somewhere. Just counting the things I had to buy I ended up with about $250 invested and it has turned out to be one of my favorite bikes, even has pretty high end stuff on it. I probably spend more time on it than any of the others...

My AC1 has about $4,000 invested into it.
