I am new to riding, should I wear bike shorts or is bike underwear with shorts on top ok. Also, is what is better gel padding or foam? THANKS!

Bibs>shorts>underwear in my book. However, when riding with the kids, or going to store, etc. I will toss on some MTB shorts that have padded liner inside, baggy shorts with pockets outside.

I do not like gel pads. You will find that pad choice is a pretty subjective thing. What I like, you will not like. I have returned shorts over the maker changing the type of pad.

Hi Solidrock, you don't want to wear underwear under cycling shorts. As jsharr said, mountain bike shorts are a nice compromise, as they don't look like cycling shorts, but they do have padding to keep you comfortable.

A lot of people think that gel is going to be more comfortable, but soon realise that it is too 'squishy', and does not offer the proper support. However, it is subjective!

Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions :) !

Bought a pair of some nice gel padded shorts in prep for a 500 mile ride (over a stretch of days) - those things were too big to begin with (kept hiking them up every time I got off the bike - felt like some of those comedic takes on older men with their pants pulled up to their, um, chest ... and the, ahem, extra padding of that nether region - well made me look like I had a diaper on. That's my take on it. hehe can you tell I'm NOT a fan? Needless to say I don't wear them, but do look at them strangely when I pass by them in my closet. I commute in the winter with winter tights and wind/rain pants-- going into Spring with just tights and now I'm into bicycle shorts with a small chamois.

Maybe I have a bicycle butt or something, but I do not need the extra padding or gel.

hehe - I do believe there's some PINK shrinkage here hehe

How far you going to go? I just use speedo compression shorts under some mesh shorts, which works dandy for shorter distances, and I don't get the bunchies like a bike diaper has.
