Okay, I rode my new allez for the first last night and was wondering, when coasting all I hear is the wheel going clickity, clickity, clickity. Does that ever quiet down, or is that just they way it is?
Thanks,

Nothing to worry about its the "ratchets" in your rear wheel. What this allows you to do is coast versus always pedaling, but when you start pedaling again the pawls engage which stops the noise.

It does kind of depend on how loud the clickity clickity clickity is. It certainly sounds like you're just hearing the freewheeling as described above, but make sure that nothing's rubbing just in case.

I have a new Allez Elite, and compared to my old bike, the free-wheel noise did seem a bit loud. The LBS told me that different types of hubs make more or less noise depending on material used, spoke count, etc. It just gives me more motivation to keep pedaling!

I agree with the tray... I have Shimano wheels, and the hubs are pretty quiet... but I've heard some bikes with other hubs, Kings, Mavic, and they are super noisy... I like a quiet bike.. that hub noise would drive me crazy

Don't worry. That's just the sound of cycling.
I have a MTB that has a sticker on the rear hub that states "Silent Clutch". I assume it is a Shimano, anyhow the thing is silent no clicking. I have never seen this on any other bike though. It feels weird not hearing that buzz from the back wheel.
CHEERS.

Need to borrow this thread, I'm currently using FIR with Veloce hubs, and i got them from my friend. When freewheeling, the hubs make a hell lot noise. What's causing the noise? Or is it that Veloce hubs are noisy by default?
I've seen bikes with Shimano hubs that are virtually noiseless, at least compared to my Campy hubs. Campy hubs, especially when new, are very noisy, but they get worn in after a while and quiet down a tiny bit. Still, you'd know it's a Campy hub when you hear the clickety-click-clickety-click-clickety-click. The good thing about that is, when you're coming up behind people on a bike path and coast a litle bit, they can definitely hear you.
If you have Shimano hubs, your bike is probably pretty quiet. If you have Campy hubs, well, you'll get used to the noise.
