Classic & Vintage - Gazelle Champion Mondial #2 (Revision #3 - new photos 6/2)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
What is better than owning one hand made of Reynolds 531 in the Netherlands Gazelle Champion Mondial?
Owning two.

I'm currently waiting on the sale of one more item from my Spring Cleaning sale (someone has dibs, but waiting on payment) before sending payment for this 78/79 Gazelle Champion Mondial A-Frame.
The new one will look very nicely right next to this one:

(posted just for East Hill, I was planning on waiting till the frame arrived for the announcement)

Congrats on a very nice acquisition. You and Marty are getting quite the little Dutch enclave down there. We may have to rename DFW to New Amsterdam. But you still don't have a Jan DeReus. :D

Very nice! I'm lovin' the clamp on steeze, when o when will I find the time to finish corky.. just mentioning the name brings shame to me.
So, suggestions for bar tape and cable housing? :) I'm leaning towards white for the housing, probably standard black for the bars.

Dark pink?
Siu, you crack me up.
what's better? not much (maybe 2 Zieleman frames)
Can't wait to see it built up, most definitely a classy looking frame.
Lynn, I think New York has rights to 'New Amsterdam' but I'm pretty
sure they don't have a de Reus!
marty
As an homage to the Fightin' Texas Aggies, I think you should look into maroon tape and housing.

White tape and saddle!
White tape, sure, and housing sure, but not saddle. There is no period appropriate white saddle (I think). We don't want it looking like a late 80s bike. Unicanitor or brooks pro.
Not sure what color the Rolls saddle is that s70rguy is sending me, but it's most likely a black one. I may do white housing, but probably black tape. Hoods on the Universal levers are gum colored so have to take that into consideration as well.
note: I may run my Brooks B-17 on this bike for a while till I find the sport-touring frame for my SunTour gear.

I would go white tape/housings/saddle. It looks really sharp on that shade of blue.

yellow housing. pink tape.
yellow housing. pink tape.
no yellow housing. Near impossible to match the hues of yellow.
pink tape... um, no.

Black Brooks B.17 or Professional, silver handlebar tape and silver (or if you are sincerely worried about giving it any '80s look, grey) brake cables.
Either that, or go with simple black cotton bar tape. Doesn't look that bad - works quite well the dark purple on this '85 Super Course:
http://www.jaysmarine.com/Raleigh85_supercourse_FINAL.jpg
Of course, this is far darker then your Gazelle, but it should work.
EDIT: What am I thinking? Cotton tape comes in blue...
-Kurt
I could do cotton over the specalized S-wrap I like to use. Otherwise the wrap comes in red, blue, black and white. Anyone ever tired cotton over a cork wrap?
speaking of cork... I do have a roll of black cinelli somewhere...
And the parts parade begins! Here's a sneak peak into what's going to be hanging on Gazelle #2.

Full group shot. Missing from the photo is seatpost / stem / bars / saddle / pedals. Most of those parts are still on their way along with the frame.
http://jonpfischer.com/thecuda/photos/upload/Gazelle_Blue/tn_IMG_1000.JPG
Universal Super 68 brakes. Barely had to take a damp cloth to these as CV-6 sent them to me in nearly perfect condition.
http://jonpfischer.com/thecuda/photos/upload/Gazelle_Blue/tn_IMG_1012.JPG
Universal levers. Also from CV-6. These I took some sandpaper to (400 and 1000 grit) to knock down some of the road rash before polishing them.

Campagnolo Nuovo Record cranks. Cleaned up the 42 ring, swapped on the 52 ring instead of the 53 that came installed. Cleaned up the crank some, but decided against going to the length of polishing it as I want to keep it looking original.

Pat. 84 Nuovo Record rear derailleur. So it was made a few years after the frame, doesn't bother me none.
http://jonpfischer.com/thecuda/photos/upload/Gazelle_Blue/tn_IMG_1008.JPG
And the front derailleur. Clamp band has been freshly polished up.
And lastly, the Simplex retrofriction shifters:

Yes, the best addition. Enjoy it.
The plan today was to glue the tubulars, but instead think I'll wait till later this week and go over to the parents, maybe on Tuesday. More space to work outside there, and he's got mineral spirits to clean up the mess I'm bound to make. Also going to have a second set of wheels built to share between the two Gazelles. A set of record hubs laced to modern Mavic Open Pro rims. Should be good for going out with the club when I don't want to get 30 miles out in the country and have a flat.

That probably makes your wife happy :D .
And I never did make any comments, so I will have to just say that I like the way your two bikes compliment each other!

The way I've been collecting blown and or otherwise flat tubes the last month or so, I must be doing SOMETHING wrong. I've averaged one a week since late March now. :o Looks like we're in for a stormy rainy week here. So less riding and may make it difficult to find a good time to get over to the parent's. We shall see. Worse comes to worse I can always pull the wheels off Gazelle #1 for a test ride.
Gazelle #2 is within a 8 mile radius of my apartment.... I'm eagerly awaiting the mail man. :D
edit:  darn mail man didn't even attempt to deliver the frame. Wife went out to the mail box and we had a slip saying that it was at the post office and I could pick it up on Monday. GRRRRRRRR
It has arrived!!

I am planning on using my black Brooks B-17 standard on this Gazelle at least for a while, the Rolls in the photo will be put on a bike eventually, which I'm not sure quite yet.

hey, stop ripping our national bikes oversea ;)
What do we get in return? some Schwinns?
every time a Gazelle topic pops up I smile. They are soooo familiar here. But good to see you enjoy them overseas. They deserve it! Nice bikes.
Keep posting pics!

If I ever have the opportunity, I'm going to rent a shipping container going from your country to mine, fill it to the top (with plenty of padding and protection!!) with Gazelle, Batavus, De Reus, Koga Miyata, and all the other great (and smaller) dutch brands that I can't name but Marty can. Then I'll have a dutch bike for every day of the year!
Back from my ride, 13.5 mi on the Gazelle AB-frame (got to come up with better names for the two!!!), rode fantastic as always. Give me a little tail wind and I can spend all day at 20+, the bike just loves it. Going to cool off a little and continue to unwrap the frame. Pictures to follow soon.

Hey, Jon - interested in another Gazelle? The dumb@$$'s from the local Alleycat race down here are offering one as the prize to the winner :

The unwrapping is complete, polishing of a few parts has started and/or been completed. Hubs need a little more work, I think I'm going to leave the seatpost (campy 2-bolt) as is for now. It's a non-fluted version that has very light machining marks on it. The options were to just polish the post and what ever scratches didn't come out with the polishing were just left there, or to sand it all down and loose the machining and then polish it back up. Decided for now to just polish, once I sand it I can't go back. It looks pretty good from 2 feet as it is now that it's just had a quick polishing job. Photos of all that later. But for now, the unwrapping job.

Couldn't help but hang a few parts on it for a test fit. Have a few things on the to-do list before the build can start. Seat tube needs a little attention as the seat post was a very tight fit when I tested it. Decided not to force it too much as I didn't want to mark up the post any more than it already is. I'm going to cold-set the rear dropouts for 126mm hub so I can switch wheelsets between the two gazelles. Also need to overhaul the bottom bracket and get the headset properly assembled. Also going to go over the frame with some maguires scratch-x and then a coat of wax before assembly.
Jon,
when are we going to see that on the road? And as much as I hate to say this I think the
Rolls saddle is appropriate on that one.
Jasper, I have an old Trek I can send over there, and maybe a Murray or a Huffy or two.

I'll probably eventually move the Rolls to it. But I'd like to get the Brooks broken in a bit more. That and I'm going to have to get good and comfortable before I try to get the Rolls bolted to that campy 2-bolt post with the tools I have, because it's going to be a time consuming job.
As far as ETA on when it'll be on the road, depends on how soon I get the frame prepped. Right now I need to get the seat tube reamed, rear triangle cold set, and the bottom bracket serviced. I'm going to call David and see when he may be able to do it, or just take it over to RBM and drop it off for the work. I can do the BB myself, but don't have the best of tools to get the thing out. Other than that, I need to pick up cable housing and a chain and everything should be set. Oh, and glue the tubulars if I want to run those any time soon.
My intent is to have it built and road tested before the Vintage Ride on the 8th.
Frame successfully spread to 126mm to handle the wheels I have. Headset reassembled (loose ball bearings! Lots of them!). Gave the whole frame a quick polish and a coat of wax before installing the brakes. (See other new thread about non-recessed brakes on frame built for recessed for the intersting discovery there)

Brakes are not being my friend tonight. While trying to figure out how the @#%& to get the brake levers on the bars I discovered this:
http://jonpfischer.com/thecuda/photos/upload/Gazelle_Blue/tn_IMG_1073.JPG
Don't know if that crack is going to prevent me from getting the lever to firmly secure itself to the bar or not yet. Something to figure out tomorrow. Should I take this as a sign to put the Campagnolo back in the box and build with SunTour instead? I have a set of aero levers I could use, but certainly don't go with the rest of the suntour (or campy) stuff. The universial brakes don't have adjusters at the brake so to use them I have to use Universal or another lever with built in adjusters.
The build has taken a new direction...

Bar tape and cable housing is NOT final. That's just what I took off the Barracuda Mk.I frame when I sold it last month. I'll be getting silver housing, probably go with black tape.
Almost finished. This bike really did turn into the 'dutch build'. Right now I have japanese, italian, french and english parts on a dutch built frame! I had to put my simplex shifters on after discovering that there is something most certainly wrong with the suntour powershifters I bought. As soon as I hooked the rear derailleur cable up it was quite obvious that the shifters had no intention of holding the gear in place. Photos in the morning.
Here are two photos, I'll post the rest when I get to work:

http://jonpfischer.com/thecuda/photos/upload/Gazelle_Blue/tn_IMG_1092.JPG
Bar wrap, cable housing, and likely the bars and stem themselves, are not final. Of course knowing me, less than half of the current parts will be on it 6 months from now.

Planning on putting on a Cinelli bar and stem soon, probably going with black bar tape and I have silver cable housings for the brakes when I swap out the bar and stem. Never was a fan of that stem, but it was cheap when I was building up the 'Cuda long ago. Just dropped the stem & bars with cables and all attached right onto the Gazelle to get it all hooked up. Still need to see if the Cyclone brakes that I picked up for lotek last night will give me the right amount of reach. I am suspect that they are the exact same set of arms that make up the Superbe brakes I have, as both are stamped 4000 on the back and appear to be the same casting. For now I'm using the long reach dual pivots.
I'm a bit late to the party....but its never too late to say....
SHHHHHWEEEEEEEEEEETTT!!!
A shout out of thanks to Unworthy1 who has sent me a new set of Universal levers to go with my Campagnolo & Universal parts group. I will be mix'in matching them with the set I have now to get a fully functional set of levers soon. I'll take the Gazelle out for its first shake down ride this weekend, been wanting to all week but work and weather hasn't been cooperative. I'll then decide if it stays SunTour 'n stuff mixed, or rebuilt with the italian gear.

Looks nice.....and I like the white bar tape.
Ok, time for photos of... I guess we'll call it Revision #3. It went from Campy w/ Universal, to SunTour, and now back to Campy (less the Universal till I can get the brake thing sorted out still). As some of you may have caught in the Ride Report thread I started a few days ago, the BB for the SunTour crank was giving me issues and since it was going to be quicker (or so I thought) to just swap out the cranks and thus derailleurs for the campy I had on hand... the build now looks like this:
http://jonpfischer.com/thecuda/photos/upload/Gazelle_Blue/tn_P6022686.JPG
http://jonpfischer.com/thecuda/photos/upload/Gazelle_Blue/tn_P6022685.JPG
Many thanks to CV-6 and the US Postal Service who some how managed to get a pair of campy nuovo record front derailleurs from Missouri to Dallas, Texas in less than 3 days, two of which were weekend. I've mounted one to the Gazelle now, and she's ready to get back out on the road again. Need to log a few miles on it before Sunday. :)
*bump* Why didn't anyone tell me the photos were broken? I posted this back when the server was having issues and guess I never realised it either.
