Classic & Vintage - 1995 Waterford

Here are some photos of a 1995 Waterford I had repainted over the winter. I found the frame (relatively cheap) on Craig's List. It was an unattractive plum with a gray fade on the rear triangle. I had it stripped and repainted at the Waterford factory between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and finally got around to having it built out last week. The photos do not do it justice - the orange glow really pops in the sunlight. The ride is beautiful as well. Here you go:

The Waterford looks great! Very classy and Waterford Bikes did a superb job on the re-paint--- sort of a modern day version of classic Schwinn's Radiant Coppertone. You have a classic keeper which is half way to full vintage status! Can you imagine when you repost pictures in 2020? The kids then will be drolling all over this!

Beautiful Waterford. What color is that? I also like the script version of the logo. Looks very classy.

I was checking your commute route from the link on your web site. Gotta love that grid system of roads. My bike commute is also about 10 miles each way, but it's twisty-turny with lots of hills.

BTW, I was born in Minneapolis at Hennepin County hospital (does that sound right?) although my family lived in Wayzata at the time.

Thanks, Bob. Tarwheel - I believe the color is Orange Glow; it's more metallic than it appears in the photos. They put a coat of gold on the bike and then add the orange on top to get depth, with a clear coat to finish it off. I liked the script graphics for the logo as well. The blocky Waterford logo is still available, but they had just introduced the script version recently when I was at the factory, and I thought it would look classy and understated, so that's what I went for. As for the grid system, it can get a little tiresome, but at least you know how blocks you need to travel. The hospital is now Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) and is the largest level 1 trauma unit in the state.

Very, very nice. I love the color and the new script style Waterford graphics, and think they look especially good on this bike. As a '95 model, this one was built in the first couple of years Waterford existed as an independent company after the 1993 Schwinn bankruptcy.

Do you have any idea what tube set was used?

I have had a 91 Waterford Paramount for a few weeks now. I am amazed at the workmanship, which is better than that on my old classic Paramounts-and I didn't think that was possible!

Agreed!

I believe the Waterford location really upped the quality ante as soon as they relocated the Paramount division to WI.

In a few weeks I will be back in Atlanta for a week and will be once again riding the '83 Paramount I bought from mrmw in February. Then it will be shipped back here to NH for a little work and more riding. When I first laid eyes on it I was immediately struck by the difference between it and my '66 P-13. It will be interesting to do side by side comparisons when the two are together.

The biggest difference is where the seatstays are attached to the seatpost collar lug. On the '83 it's as if they just float next to each other. There is no sign of any brazing material what so ever.

Since it's a 1995 1200, it's 753. Sweet! I should have checked my notes, but was too lazy:

The 1100, 1200, 2200 all share the same race/criterium (also referred to as 'R' geometry i.e. R-14, R-33) handling geometry. The 1100 was built out of a custom Reynolds 531 tubeset and came in stock even geometries from 50cm to 62cm and non-stainless dropouts.

The 1200 upgraded to a custom Reynolds 753 set (heat-treated 531) that was lighter and stronger. It was available in both stock geometries in 1 cm increments and customs. They had stainless dropouts. 1100/1200 production ceased in 2002 when Reynolds put all of their promotion behind 853 and discontinued 531 & 753.

The 2200 is the custom 853/True Temper OX Plat version and is the current lugged execution with this geometry.
