Are there any bicycle commuters in Sacramento area who are angry with the road situation here?
Is there a need for a critical mass ride here? Are riders happy? Do riders care? Is the number of riders insignificant?

Just wondering. Anyone want a connector to the American River Bike Trail from the South Sac, Elk Grove Area?

Now that gas is $4/gallon finally I am seeing a lot more riders on the road during the commute. I live in Elk Grove and would love to have a connector trail (I talk to people about it all the time), and I would love to have Light Rail make its way out here ASAP, but there is little being done on both fronts. No one I've talked to really seems to care that much

I think about it all the time though. My plan: Use the unused Beach Lake Preserve frontage road along I-5 between Laguna and Mack has its own (also UNUSED except for the occasional farm tractor wft?) I-5 overpass that connects to Freeport. All it needs is another bike overpass (over freeport) so it could connect to the levee on Pocket and add about a mile of paving to have it connect to Laguna Blvd. Voila! It sounds really simple and easy that way. I wonder how much that one over 50 near the folsom automall cost? Doing one over Freeport would be a fraction of that because it would be about 1/4 as long. I also think it needs some work where the new marina hotel is near Fruitridge, but SERIOUSLY!!! Most of the infrastructure is already there. It's just convincing the Pocket NIMBY's and Nature Preserve people that this is a great idea.

I currently don't commute at all by bike for several reasons: My two route options are just not safe in the morning. I have to drop my daughter off at school and pick her up and my son from daycare. And lastly, my employer offers subsidized vanpool that I share with 5 other people that works out to $60/month and averages over 100mpg vs. being a single driver. I would do it more if we had a safe trail though. Cause I love me some biking.

It says in your profile that you're an atty. Let's spearhead this operation!!!

I guess I'm fairly fortunate as the Natomas area generally has wide lanes with wide bike lanes, and it's a snap to get to the ARBT (the connector they provide isn't convenient from my home, but it's still safe/easy to get to discovery for me). I do ride downtown though, where bike lanes aren't quite as plentiful (nonexistent) but still don't have any issues. IMO, down there, enough side streets exist that one could ride safely and still reach their destination.

Also, I don't feel like we need a CM event (though there already is a CM event in Sacramento from time to time, but I don't know how popular it is). Clogging up the roads and pissing people off isn't a good way to win hearts and minds, or to initiate change in our (cyclists) favor.

I used to ride up Florin-Perkins, crossed Folsom, and snaked my way to the ARBT, then out by the Cal Expo to get to work near the Arden Mall. Now I changed jobs and work near North Natomas (Northgate area) Its further and I haven't ridden once. The route to the ARBT was filthy and I used to get weekly flats. Sometimes 2 days in a row. That's why I personally would support a CM because though I complained often, the bike lanes were never cleaned.

The most direct way for me would be to ride straight up Power Inn to Howe to get to the ARBT, but I am actually afraid to try that.

That stretch is owned by the regional sanitation district. I know because I got chased out of there one day as I tried to find a route to EG. It wouldn't take much to pave a path to Laguna Blvd connecting to Beach Lake Road. There's the overpass to Freeport road, but also there seems to be construction on the east side of I-5 just north of the overpass. A path could continue north on that side of the freeway and connect with Freeport Blvd. at Pocket/Meadowview. Freeport has a wide shoulder/BL all the way to Sutterville and is a straight shot into Midtown.

Northgate is a **** hole. It isn't surprising that the bike lanes are filled with broken glass and debris - all the drunks, homeless and rebellious thugs tend to break bottles and litter.

I don't know where exactly you work, but not much further up the ARBT Discovery and you could take Truxel up as far as you needed - either cutting over at the Target shopping center or continuing past it if that worked. There's definitely a lot of traffic there, but it might be a better option. Or you could change out your tires to something like the Armadillo elite? I commuted on those (23 miles each way) through Rancho Cordova (Coloma isn't a very nice place to be on a bike) and never had a flat.

I did just change to Armadillos, but I am just hesitant to try the ride again. Without a direct way to the ARBT the ride takes too long. If I were single it wouldn't be a problem, but my family expects a little attention from me.

I am thinking of resorting to a "park and ride" by Power Inn and Folsom.

BTW, I think access to Truxel from where I work is too clogged with vehicular traffic. I avoid that in my car, too. Northgate overpass (over I-80) is not the easiest for northbound traffic either.

Hence the causes of my frustration. But I don't think there are enough bicycle commuters to make a difference. We'll see what happens when gas goes to $5.00 per gallon.

Don't know if this would work for you, but a coworker commutes from near Arco Arena to downtown by taking Airport Road south to San Juan, San Juan east for less than a mile over I-80, Acevedo south to Discovery Park.

Sorry, I didn't read last part of your post.

Yes, I am an atty. And I used to belong to the local advocacy group here, SABA, but they are spread very thin and aren't making headway for a south connector. My membership lapsed and I haven't renewed. I think I will renew again, though, because it is important to be united.

Sac County had some workshops for the transportation plan, but I missed out on those. I'm going to write some letters to our County Supervisor and transportation dept with idea such as the one you mentioned. With gas going up, the time is better than ever!

That's exactly the route I take (I live up San Juan west of Airport Rd.). There's not much debris on the shoulder, and with the exception of the occasional person trying to make the yellow at El Camino and Acevedo, it's awesome. Acevedo is extremely wide, big fat bike lanes and traffic isn't dangerous through there.

I don't think that would work well for me, but that is a great satellite image/map!! Thanks!
