Rearview recomendation

I'm about as newb as a 43 year old can be at this, and am looking for recomendations for rearview. Helmet mounted? Handlebar? Goggles?

I'm primarily commuting on a sholder of a highway, and it sure would be special if I could see behind me.

You mighta picked the wrong forum. You should post this in the commuting forum. The commuting forum is a nice supportive venue, electronics and gadgets is where you come to debate the superiority of Halogen or LED.

But in answer to your question I would reccommend the helmet mounted "Take-A-Look" mirror or similar. There are 4 advantages that i know of:
1) You can scan to see whats behind you or what's nearly beside you
2) If your riding in different positions as with drop bars, it's only a simple head movement to see behind you.
3) Vibrations are damped by mounting it to your helmet/glasses.
4) The chicks totally dig it (okay maybe not)

When i first got it i didn't like it much, using it is kind of like a skill and takes some getting used to. Once you do you'll love it. I do similar riding to you and that is what I'd recommend. Don't forget to check out the commuting forum!

I use the 3rd Eye eyeglass mount, since I always use eye protection (tinted or clear insert). Take-a-Look's corners seem potentially more dangerous to me, and it's less discrete.

I used a third eye (same concept as the take a look, just a different brand)mounted to my riding goggles frame for 15 years. I have now switched to the Sprintech paired mirrors and Zefal Spy Mirror (road version). I use all three. It is great to see everywhere without turning around.

If I could only have one mirror it would be the Zefal Spy mounted to my down tube. I would have liked to have tried this mirror but the Zefal was available locally and works well.

I have a cycling companion who has used both the Third Eye and the Take a Look extensively over decades of bike commuting, and he's much happier with the Take a Look. He says that, while both do a decent job when new, the Take a Look's mount is more secure in the long run, less prone to loosening or shifting, and withstands crashes better.

Just what I know from a friend - one I trust.

Do you need the right side? I am thinking about getting these, but question rather ordering one for the right side.

I very much like the Mirrycle - there are versions for drop bars and flats. I've heard people say bar mirrors vibrate, but I've never had that problem. I also just couldn't get on with helmet mounts.

Some head-mount mirrors have dangerous sharp edges - watch for that.

i got a beer-view-mirror. some dude assembles them at his kitchen table. they are $12. it works very well. you have the choice of your favorite brew (if it isn't too exotic).

I tried the Mirrycle on my hybrid. It was ok. I much prefer the Cycle Aware Reflex Mirror that mounts (via sticky tape) to my helmet. Works great no matter which bike I ride.

Can the sunglasses mirrors be mounted of the right side too? Or is it a left side only mount?

I have the third eye mounted to my helmet. I used the sticky tape to position it, then zip tied it.

Haven't tried bar mounts, but, doubt they would do as good a job.

There is one issue I have with the helmet mount. If I have too much crap in my backpack, it makes it difficult to see when in the drops or aerobars. So perhaps a combination of mirrors might be best.

Only if hitting your knees is already an issue. The Sprintech's would not cause you to hit your knees while riding. It is only an issue if you let your bars turn to far while stopped and your leg bumps the mirror and knocks it out of adjustment. But this is only annoying since it is easy to adjust back to the correct position.
