I'm not going to be able to do this century. Too many centuries not enough time.
You guys have fun.

Looking forward to this on Sunday. It should be a little over a double metric for me as I will be riding to the start from Sunnyvale. I wonder how bad the short steep section of Mt. Eden is going to hurt after all the previous climbing?

Fixed ... which also means I'll only see you at the start of the ride.

Ha... This is a climbing ride. I'll be doing the slinky with all of you guys. Fall back on the climbs, gain on the flats/rollers/DH. Back and forth. Good thing for the rest stops :thumb:

Ditto on the double metric, from Santa Clara. Just got done with 105 miles and 8500 feet of climbing over 2 days. I'd much rather do it all in one :) Though pushing 150 miles it'll be pretty long.

Never ridden most of the roads on the ride, though I've done Page Mill.

Too early to ride in from San Mateo. Too early for caltrain. Looks like we're driving in.

Anyone up for an easy ride Saturday, just to get some spinning in?

If I have my single bike ready by then, I'll join you. Waiting on new levers... My tandem stole the current ones

Man, MapMyRide fails it hard. JavaScript in an infinite loop. Fancy!

I can't see the route itself, but judging by the distance and elevation profile (I don't think I've ever seen a NCBF ride with so little climbing! I think Pete's route for the Oddball was more than that!), it sounds nice.

I did say it would be easy ... but don't let that fool you. There are some climbs ... just not 5 mile in length.

I can't even get bikely.com to come up, so this was my next choice.

Weird, Bikely seems to work fine for me, aside from some routes I made a few weeks ago still not having elevation data.

So what time does everyone want to meet at the start? The 112 mile ride is 6am-8am.

Sorry for a dumb question, but how do folks typically ride "together" for the hilly parts of a century? In any group, I imagine people will climb and descend at different rates. Do you each go your own pace and regroup at the rest points, or do you try to stick together the whole time? (Yes, it's my first century ride!)

Own pace on the climbs/descents with regroups at summits/bases and rest stops.

Flats: Try to stay in a paceline with the sub-group of us that are going at your speed.

I'm shooting for 6, but since I'm riding from Santa Clara I'll probably leave at 5:30 and take way longer than I expect to make it :) Sunrise at 5:50, hopefully with a headlamp I'll be fine on the way up. Definitely hoping to start as early as possible. I don't anticipate taking all day, but ya never know...

Better question is, WHERE will we meet and who to look for? :)

Yes. If you follow the rules outlined here (http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=2604861&postcount=1), we MIGHT let you ride with us.

I doubt I'll make it down there and rolling before seven.

Yeah. I'm realizing PA is gonna be more like 15 miles from home so even if I leave exactly on the nose at 5:30 it'll be tough to be there any earlier than 6:30. And if I leave any earlier than 5:30 I'll be asleep and riding in the dark anyway.

Ha, I didn't even have to click the link to know which thread that was! Instant Road Forum classic.

I'll be meeting another riding buddy at the start around 6:40am for a 7am rollout. I'll keep my eye out for the Norcal folks, since I can recognize you from all the photos on here. (You can spot me by the yellow ISM saddle on my bike, which I hopefully will not be cursing after only mile 70.)

I wasn't going to do this, bu i just got a call from a friend who registered and now can't go and is giving me the registration!
I AM IN!!!!
I'll be leaving Antioch at 4am and hoping for a 6am start.
Has anyone transfered a registration?
I can't find directions on their site how to do it.

Anyway, look for me on my bronze Kestrel RT700. I'll be going slow.

Great Curtis. Which distance are you doing? As far as transferring registration, how about emailing sequoia2008@westernwheelers.org ?

I'm doing the century. Hope I'm not sorry as it has more climbing than the Davis Double.
I emailed that address and I'm hoping for a reply.

Weather forecast looks like it will be foggy or cloudy most of the day along the coast tomorrow. There should be a stiff tailwind heading south on Hwy 1.

Looks like fun. Just remember that you're not done climbing when you get to the top of Mountain Charlie. There's another 8 miles or so of climbing on Skyline up to Castle Rock. It is not steep, but it can be a grind if you're tired from Mountain Charlie. Mount Eden will feel like just a minor speed bump on your dash home.

The descent down hwy 9 should be fun :D I can feel the pain in my knees already ... bring it on!

Picked up my packet 'n stuff today.

Also got some leg warmers (definitely will need them) and full-fingered gloves. With cold morning weather in PA, colder weather at the summit, and an even colder descent into the cold coast, hopefully I'll survive. Long sleeve wool top, and I got some toe booties too, as my feet like to freeze on descents.

I also got some purty yellow bottle cages to bling up my ride a little bit. And some hammer gel and sugar-free hydration tablets. Funny how "picking up a few items" turns into "buying lots of crap." :)

johnny99
05-31-08, 06:30 PM
It's not going to be that cold. The climb up Mountain Charlie will likely be sunny and warm, so wear stuff that you can stuff in your pockets when the day warms up.

Got our numbers today too. I also, had to pick up some things.. Haha. 10% discount though!

Taking the camelback. Storage space to spare.

This could be a good combination of a nice tailwind going south down the coast, and no wind while northbound, climbing Charlie (right? I mean, wind blowing south over the mountains towards the coast would be weird).

I'm getting a bit nervous as I finish prepping, but I don't know why. I did a double century 5 years ago, and I'm definitely much better prepared for this than I was then. I guess it's just because my longest ride since I started again was 62 miles, but that kind of distance is no sweat for me, and we've got all day for this one :) Should be about 150 total with my r/t from home.

I'm # 852. Saw some friends from WW there, but I know they will pass me like I'm standing still. Luckily, I got out of Bicycle Outfitters without buying anything. It's actually pretty smart for Bicycle Outfitters, to have Sequoia Century check-in at their place.

So 6 am ... where is everyone meeting at?

#342. Dumb question.. do they supply safety pins at the start?

reidconti
05-31-08, 08:16 PM
They supplied safety pins at the shop. But maybe they'll have em at the start too?
Speaking of which, where does that RiderID tag go? I know you don't need it, but it says "no pin, spindle hole" or something. What spindle do they even intend that you put it on?

Have a great ride, everyone! It's a great route and great organization. If you're doing the long ride, take it slow in the first half 'cause Mt. Charlie is tough at mile 70 .

I'm really bummed that I can't be with you, but I'll be there in spirit...

Thanks for the advise, Alan. It seems every time I do Mt. Charlie, it's at the end of the ride, and always tough. Hopefully my pace up Mt. Charlie will be > 0 ...
