I just had my first bike fit yesterday, which was wonderful, but I was told that I need a shorter stem. The problem is that on my lovely Bianchi Brava, the stem is apparently not the standard, so it's not something they could easily replace. I've looked on a few websites and I cannot find a stem that looks like it would work on my bike. I guess the stem doesn't lift off like they usually do-it's attached to the neck. This is what I could gather yesterday. Any knowledge of what I should be looking for, or where in the Seattle are I should go to get this part?
Thank you!!

Do you mean that you have a quill stem? Does it look like this:

No, it's got a pivot so I can change the angle of the stem, not just one solid piece.

But is it a quill type?
It is a quill. I'm surprised. I'm also surprised your LBS couldn't find a replacement.

Well then, there you go. You need a quill stem, these are for threaded forks. Your LBS should be able to get one for you or there are many online sites that sell them. You can get them with or without the pivot. They come in different angles, heights and extensions.
Just make sure you get the right size for your forks, most likely a 1". That is the size of the forks, not the stem, the stem is actually 22.2mm. The stem for 1 1/8" fork is 25.4mm or 1". It can be confusing. You also need the size of the clamp area of your bars.

Kalloy makes those angle-adjustable stems available in 80 and 90mm extensions. You need one shorter than that?
(Unless it's already bottomed out) Drop the near-vertical piece of the stem all the way down, angle the bit attached to the bar upwards. Instant shorter stem.
Maybe not the neatest, but it'll get you back on the road faster, and you have a chance to evaluate the LBS recommendation before buying anything.

I need a 70 or 75. Is this something I can find in a shop in the area, or will I need to order it online? We just bottomed out the stem when I went for my fit-I'll see how that goes, but I think I still need a shorter reach.

Most stores I know have a couple of quill stems, but finding one in your size might be difficult. Online would be your best bet.
Don't lower the stem all the way if you have a short head tube. Steerer tubes are butted at the bottom and if the wedge is located in smaller area it could come loose while riding.

What you need is a quill to threadless stem adapter. Quill stems have gotten harder to get in the past few years as most bikes have gone to 1 1/8 threadless.

Threadless is more common, but I wouldn't say that quill stems are hard to get.

Nitto makes some fine stems. Do you need an adjustable stem like the one on the Bianchi? I have several quill stems I am now using. I also have a Richey stem that is an 80 mm stem for a threadless that is adjustable and can be used with a quill/threadless stem adaptor. If you have any interest I am going to be putting the adj stem on eBay for a BIN price of $40.

I'm not sure what handlebar diameter you have, but.....

Nitto, quill, 70mm, 26.0mm clamp, and tall, so you can raise it way up, or you can keep it down low. $40.
