It sure has taken me a long time to decide ( I'm still subject to last minute changes :-) but I plan to buy a Dahon Mu P8 tomorrow. I've considered the Birdy and Bike Friday, but have decided that my first folder should be the Dahon for the following reasons. The Birdy has 18 inch wheels and finding a good commuter, flat resistant tire could be a problem . The BF seems to flold to a larger package. A secondary and significant factor is simply the Dahon is priced a bit better. Well is my thinking on this reasonable, I"m still open to last minute suggestions :o

I find the Schwalbe 40-355 Marathon Racer a great commuting tire on the Birdy. Its fast and has good puncture resistance.

Well, I may have been "thinking about" folders longer! I just looked and realized I have been a member of this forum since 12/04 and have just this week purchased my first folder. Like you, my short list was BF, Birdy and Dahon. I went with a Dahon Speed P8. My rationale:
Looking for an all around machine that folds. I already have a stable of recumbents for fast day rides, a MTB for city commuting and off road, and a road bike for club rides. Rather than seeking to fill a niche with a folder I have to admit that I was seeking a folder to establish a niche. We'll see how it goes.
I test rode and ordered a tikit but canceled that due to a bad experience at the dealer and with BF. I ruled out the Birdy because of hi $$$. So I paid half of what a tikit would cost for the Speed P8 and think it was the perfect choice for a first folder. Now we'll just see how it fits into the family. So I encourage you to go ahead with the Mu.

Well I actually bought my first folder today. I ended up with a Dahon Mu P24. We have a lot of hills in our area, so am pleased to have the lower gearing the P24 has to offer. It seems like a good all around travel bike. My wife seem to like it as well. Do I see another one in the future? Probably ;)
