I'll be in Chicago on vacation this summer, with the bike. I know this is an overly broad question, but where do the locals do their training rides? Is there a particular place to go? I'm not looking for the trail along the lake with every cyclist plodding along type of ride, but something more for training. In Manhattan a lot of people use Riverside Dr to get to the GWB and go into NJ for training, whereas the west side bikeway is just jammed with pedestrians, dog-walkers, rollerbladers and every other type of obstruction, sometimes the worst ones are the hot-dogs on their bikes that think that they're winning every race with people that aren't racing.

I guess you would want to know where I'm staying, and that would be a good question. I'll have to ask my wife since she's from there, but she's in DC at the moment.

This would be good to know. As much as NYC thinks the Second City is some rural backwater ;), Chicago spreads from basically South Bend up to Milwaukee and west to Rockford.

Here's a good starting point for rides: http://www.chicagobikeracing.com/index.php/rides
