Foo - I have an odd health issue

When I sneeze I have fits. I'll sneeze a dozen times or more in a row. My father is the same way, however for me it has become worse of late. I've passed out three times this month because I hyperventilated from sneezing, and just had no choice but to sit down for a moment because of a sneezing fit. The doc tells me, "You just sneeze a lot" and offers me claratin or some such.

My concern is driving and flying. I'm afraid I've stepped into an epileptic like area. Not that I'm having seizures, but controlling a vehicle while sneezing 16 times and then passing out is rather--dubious. My other concern is if I bring these worries to my MD do I risk loosing my license, which may very well be permanent as far as my pilot's ticket goes. And that would suck, especially if this passes with the pollen season.

Try a neti pot? Edit I originally typed "try the neti Pot?" But that sounded like there was one being passed around.

I've never once come close to passing out. Have you tried sex during the fits to make it stop? It might be tough to stand on your head in the middle of it though...

Sometimes sneezing is triggered by a slight drying of the nasal membranes and the accompanying itch and irritation, plus it will help rinse any pollen from your sinuses, in a manner similar to the Neti Pot.

Try the Salt-water, Coffee, Whiskey regimen with the Neti Pot. That will clear out anything in there.

I'll look into it, but it does seem rather unpleasant. But I guess a head wound from the coffee table would be even more unpleasant.

BTW, what the hell are you doing up at four in the morning? Good lord woman, my heart doesn't even beat at four in the morning.

A bit off topic, but I have a strange sneeze symptom as well. I seldom sneeze, but when I do, they are often violent and sometimes leave me with a bit of pain in my joints, esp. elbows, wrist, etc. Anyone have anything like this?

I never have joint pain.
It's not a stretch for me to sympathize if your arms are flailing about like flags in a hurricane.

I'd still try the sex approach...especially if you can convince your partner it's medically necessary.

Save the digital massage for anniversaries.

Wow :eek: I hope you find a way to avoid passing out, I've never heard of a sneezing fit being that bad.

Even without passing out, I just discovered how dangerous sneezing can be. This spring seems to be worse than usual for me for hay fever. I just got back from a ride (gorgeous day :)), and towards the end I was cruising at 25 mph on a fast section of road when I started sneezing, and the bike jerked around on the first two sneezes before I took my weight off the bars. A bike is very sensitive to the convulsions when you sneeze! There were a lot of cars so I was a little scared of veering into traffic. I might have to consider taking antihistamine before a ride, which I hate because I get that nervous wired feeling (from the pseudoephedrine I guess?).

It's because I'm only able to take a shallow breath between sneezes, which lets CO2 build up in my blood, and down I go.

Because of the messages to Allen, I just ordered a Neti pot from Amazon... I think it will be interesting to see what it does for my allergies.

I skip whiskey and use tequila or mescal, depending on how bad the pollen count is.

I don't think I've ever sneezed more than twice in a row, and my allergies are mild to nonexistent, but even so, the neti pot has been a really nice thing to add to the daily regimen. It doesn't make a huge, life-changing, night-and-day difference, but I can definitely tell when I missed it that day.

Not at all. The salinity of the water in the neti pot makes it feel pleasant to your mucous membranes and you breathe through your mouth as you use it. Also, use warm water, not cold.

Me being as goofy as I am I swore I'd drown myself. But I got so desperate when I was sick I went and got one. And I didn't drown! :)

I've heard that some folks thing that sneezing is like an orgasim. Sad.

Anyway the neti pot is a wierd device but it does help. The right mix of salt is important. It should taste like tears.

:) The worst thing that could happen is you stick a bunch of salt water up your nose and you are still blacking out. (though I certainly hope not)
