An early ride this morning (Friday and Saturday are our weekend)
Mrs geezer and I took the tandem for the first time in a long time. Our friend David was going to join us, but wasn't there at the start. Well, he was playing his saxophone at a concert until late last night, so we assumed he was sleeping - but the phone rang when we were a couple of miles in. He'd popped an inner tube getting ready to ride on his mointain bike - nice but heavy full suspension Trek. We said to help himself to one of our bikes and to join us at a coffee stop.
So he turned up on my 'old reliable' steel Specialized touring bike from the early 90s. And proceeded to leave us in his dust whilst burbling on about 'wow, this is light, this is easy, this runs smooothly...'
Oh shut up Dave, and be nice to your friends! I think he's a convert to the 'dark side' of road bikes!
I'm delighted he likes my older bike as much as I still do!:D

Those late 80s and early 90s Specialized road bikes were pretty good bikes and a real bargin at the time. I've still got two (well one is currently disassembled, but the other road worthy). I remember my first ride on a quality road bike. I had a similar reaction.... wow. However, I do take exception to the use of 'dark side' when discussing road bikes. Rather, I'd say he's seen the light.

That was mighty kind of you Wobbly. I can't think of a more suitable bike than an "old" Specialized touring bike as an introduction to the roadie world.

Yeah, just like I remember getting off my Schwinn Varsity (they didn't have mountain bikes back then) and onto my new Peugeot PX-10 back in '68.
Wow, what a difference a light, low rolling resistance bike makes!

Can remember when I got Boreas- I loaned the OCR to a mountain biking friend to do a road ride with me. He was impressed with the speed but not over enamoured with riding with his head between his knees. We did a few rides with him on the OCR but it was not regular and still had the worry over the ride position. Then I got the TCR so loaned him Boreas. He left me in the dust for 5 miles- then he had to call it a day. That bar being 3" lower got him in the neck. He hasn't ridden with me since on the road- But I have been dragged out on the MTB to show him how to tackle the technical trails.
The "Dark Side" takes some adjusting to- but it does come eventually.

Just an update.
I feel like a sleazy trafficker, offering bike rides - 'first time's free, have fun...!'
This evening Dave and I went for a short ride on singles, with Mrs G there to ensure fair play. I offered him a spin on my new 'Rocky Mountain' - best ever bike I've had (and partly white too).
We have a little hill. Mrs S and I (on Dave's mountain bike) went up it once. Dave did five hill repeats. Uttered the ultimate heresy - "I had no idea. It is about the bike, isn't it?".
And when finishing, he mentioned "I saw a bike in a shop. Colnaggysomething. Are they any good?"
Another one bites the dust. Only a matter of time, wouldn't you say?

Yep, he's doomed. Good news!
And if he sticks to white bikes, he's going to be FAST! :D

I hope bumping an old thread isn't wrong - just to update
Dave has ordered the spiffiest Madone.
Inevitable, eh! I feel so co-dependent:thumb:
