If so.....I'm getting an ebike made in 6weeks or so that will hit 80km/h with no assist :D....mind you, it is with a 3kw hub motor. With assist im not sure how much faster....I think ill be fighting wind resistance pretty hard by that stage.

R Martin's selling a scooter * with similar specifications. :) If it's the same bike, let us know how it performs in the real world. Many, many people living in suburbia are looking for practical solutions.

lol and fighting not getting killed! lol one person opening their car door into your path going 80kmh(50mph) and you'll be dead before you know what hit you. just be careful :) nobody wants to die enjoying their bike. Me? I have a basic 500w hub motor and I hit about 20-25mph(40kmh) that's without wind, into the wind I get about 18mph.

heh, i know what you mean - ill def be careful on my ebike....im reserving top speeds for lonely trails or open roads with no traffic. Also gotta appear to be 'riding' my bike normally for Mr Johhny Law:p

the appear to be pedaling normally dont work when your doing 49mph and thay come out of nowhere.
sad part is he liked my bike he wants one lol. i didnt bother to tell him its custom. and runing at 2x the voltage.

I'm in Australia - 200w is our limit (totally rediculous IMO) hardly enough to get you up an incline. I figure my 3000w hub motor will fit the bill much nicer.......but yeah, got appear to be riding normally on the road, i.e throttle turned waaaay down and doing 30-40km/h.

I am good for 25 mph / 42 kph. I can descend at up to 38 mph / 63 kph, but that is completely freewheeling. I would go faster were it not for the effects of the permanent magnets in the hub motor.

At those speeds I only feel safe with the some upgrades I made to the bike, namely big powerful disc brakes (210 mm Magura Gustav M in front. HIGHLY recommended), downhill mtb class wheelbuilds, and big smooth tires (Schwalbe 2.35 big apples also highly recommended). For higher speeds I would require full suspension, a beefier frame, and a longer wheelbase than I have. All of which are in the works.

I also licensed my bike as a moped in California. We have 3 classes: 20 mph, 30 mph and 45 mph (45 is called electric motorcycle, but kind of a gray area I plan to make a bike for). So my bike has a license plate on it (scroll down the page):

I carry my eBike's registration paperwork with me at all times on the bike, as well as a printout of the DMV code that explains how my bike is legal up to 30 mph, since many peace officers are unaware of it. Even so, my eBike remains stealthy, most do not realize it has a motor. Even other cyclists. And I have never been pulled over. But I have heard enough horror stories ranging from tickets to vehicle impounding that I have decided to be proactive and prevent it.

Today, I forgot to charge my Bionx so I had to bike to work with 1 tiny little bar showing. This is the bar that practically looks like a dot. I thought I was going to just bike it without assistance and charge it at work for the ride home. But after a couple of miles of riding, I decided to turn the assist to level 1. Amazingly, I had enough juice to make it all the way to work... 9 miles with the assistance! Not sure how much further I could've gone, but I was pretty happy to get range like that on so little power remaining.

I live in California and will probably get my M2 license, I don't believe i actually need to register it but i really do need to get the M2. Ive go some pretty nice battery's so I can go that speed for at least 20 miles, probably quite a bit more actually. Ive looked around everywhere i can find and haven't heard of anyone getting ticketed for having an ebike go to fast in california and ive gone past quite a few police officers and aside from one motorcycle cop not one has even given me a second look. I think the motorcycle cop was just looking because I was oddly positioned(for a bike) in a rather strange intersection.

If you actually want to be legal on a bike that can do 72kph, I suspect you need motorcycle license/insurance/registration/inspection. And headlight/taillight/turn signals.

Its not really that I want to be legal..... its just that i want to be closer to legal. I have looked into getting my bike registered as a motorcycle but its a very unpleasant process assuming I would even be able to do it. Where as the moped route allows me to skip over the whole vehicle inspection\registration part. I do have headlight/taillight but turn signals could be a good idea. I wonder what kind of nasty fines I would get here if I got ticketed.

It hit me funny is all. **note to all ebikers, I was cruising down a city street (two lanes each direction w/ cars parked tightly on each side) and a taxi pulled to the side in front of me, WATCH OUT! the lady passenger decided to kick her door open into the street and I almost hit it going about 22mph. Would have been messy missed by a few inches, lol so just be careful and always always always wear a helmet. My motto is I'd rather look silly wearing a helmet and neon yellow construction vest, than look cool without it and die. lol

well I say closer to legal because local law enforcement is usually totally uneducated when it comes to things that aren't 4 wheeled or run on gas. This gives me the bull**** advantage where i convince people not to bother with me even though I'm slightly over the legal limit.

Schwinn iZip from Canadian Tire. Had it about a week now.

Took a GPS unit for a ride yesterday.

Pedal only: 14.4 MPH, 23 km/h
Motor only: 15.6 MPH, 25 km/h
Both: 20.6 MPH: 33 km/h
Max Speed on trip: 26.5 MPH, 42 km/h (probably down the hill into the ravine)

Speeds were on a gravel road in fair shape. Some washboarding, and with gravel ridges I try to avoid.

Today I timed the trip into town. 2.33 miles took me 9 minutes, for an average speed of 15.5 MPH. There is a fairly steep ravine on the road to town, but mostly it's fairly flat.

I bought the bike for two reasons; first, to get some excercise, and second, to save gas. I always like it when I can park the pickup.

Brand new Schwinn Izip, probably because the battery is new, my speedo says 23 MPH on a flat. It may be off by a few mph also, may need to calibrate it. It feels fast enough.

I'm good for 32 mph an the straights, i normally cruise in the 20-25 mph range, i keep that pace for my 7 miles each way to work. Do need to find a better braking system, i have to adjust them every 3-4 days.

Mine does not have an assist alone feature. A sensor in the bottom bracket acts as a throttle, If you don't pedal you don't go. The assist kicks out at about 17 mph. Not much for a top end but it can haul gross weight.

I have a 48 volt recumbent ebike, and it will top out at 43 km/h (30mph) which is plenty fast on a bike BTW.
My Cycle Analyst meter says I average 22km/h which is the speed on most trails.

i orig just added another 12v sla
now i run ct yardworks 20v limn bats
go to your local ct and check em out
i ride on gravel but if it was 99%
i'd switch to mid size nobby tire

Thanks. I had a look at the CT web site, and only see one LI battery for Yardworks, and it's only 6AH. Is that the one, and if so, how long will it run on a charge?

I guess I might try the extra 12V SLA, though I suppose I'll need another charger.

i put 2 in my orig case at a weight of
only 5.5 lbs that's 14.5 off orig weight
if you had added the 3rd sla for 36v
then it's 19lb roughly saved
distance 15km no pedaling i'm 206lb
w/3 sla fresh off charger i was getting 40v
with limn i get 42 of the charger

instead of putting batteries on charger
because my bats are in orig bat box
i made some extention cables out of my box
to hook to charger pins...
