I just had such a blast! I just got back from a great ride! 7.3 miles 4 inches of mostly fresh powder~!!~ I did have to cross one bridge where the snow plows had thrown snow onto the sidewalk/bikepath. (the only place out of the crazy traffic) The snow there was closer to 8 inches and crusty.
Temperature started out at 7F/-13C and dropped to 5F/-15C by the end of the ride. I averaged 7.3MPH and was out for an hour. Was a bit cool when I started but warmed up around mile 2. My feet started to get cold around mile 6.

I was dressed in a pair of tights, cycle shorts for a base with a cotton lined wind shell pant for the outter layer. Cycling jersy base layer, then added a long sleeved cotton t-shirt, fleece pull-over, and my winter stadium coat. Of course the belaclava and a pair of Specialized SUB-ZERO gloves.

Stayed nice and tosty except as mentioned above.

I just had to share the experience! I am so stoked! :D

Hey, me too! Finally snow in Minnesota, got the studs out and went cruising on the city streets! Too damn cool. Went by the LBS have a set of Nokian studs coming Tuesday! I'm off all this week, so I'm out riding, don't bother calling.

While at the LBS picked up a pair of Pearl Izumi winter tights, and a new jacket, that'll allow me to vent the pits! I am so pysched! So was the LBS, biggest sale all day with the snow that is falling, Sunday, and the Vikings playing at home.

Yea! Ain't it great! I don't have studded snow tires. (yet) Just the MTB tires which worked out really nicely. The new duds should work out nicely!

The Vikings won!!~!!!!! I am HUGE Vikings fan. I used to live near the "Cities." I worked in Savage for several years. I lived in Montgomery, Jordan, and Belle Plain. Some days I really miss the area!

I am also off all this week. I'll take some photos of the snow riding and post them here in the "Winter Cycling" forum.

Have fun!

Well, I rode today in Minnesota on my roadie commuter with slicks. With the tires depressurized, no prob whatsoever and quite fun...

Wow K6, I have not tried riding on my roadie in the snow & ice. Of course, my roadie is a steel frame and I don't think I would subject it to those conditions.

Glad to hear you got out and enjoyed the fine winter riding! :D

Well, this is my old steel commuter roadie (Giant Perigee). I wouldn't hurt my nice one.

In any case, it was better commuting today, as the roads were somewhat cleaner!

Anyhow, gotta catch the bus to get to my bike....(I bike to the bus stop some 7 miles away, then take the bus to the University)

Had another nice ride today! Temp was around 40F and it was sunny. The only draw back was the winds gusting to 35MPH. (we call it a CHINOOK wind)
11.3 miles in snow, ice and slush. :D I'm attaching a couple of photos. One is my bike along the local trail and the other is one of the dams that are along the trail.

GotBent

Damn thats a big dam!

Had to say it. I doubt if there are many other people biking on the trails this time of year. Is that the case?

Great pic's, N7! I had a great ride in this morning, the roads are all ice/snow packed but I just boogied right in. My studded tire worked great.

There was a couple of other tracks out there. But your are right, not many other folks get out on the trails in the snow. I must say, they have no idea what they are missing! :D

Thanks!
Great! I have yet to get studded tires. So far the knobbies have been doing a great job. We "normally" don't have that many days of snow cover, so have not taken the plung yet.

I must say that I don't get as excited as some of you about The Big Chill. I moved back to Minnesota from Califonia a few years ago, and I'm still getting my ice legs, fingers, nose, and toes again. I just did a little riding to do errends. I used the Burly flat bed trailer with a big plastic tub for groceries on it. I filled it so full of towels to insulate the perishables, that I had very limitted spaces for the food. The ride wasn't too bad, but I wasn't prepared to come home from work at midnight 7 miles and temps below zero. I might go back to using the giant fuzzy choppers, because my fingers were getting cold.

The best part of this weather from my point of view is that the lakes should be freezing over, and I really enjoy riding on them.

Hey Icerat!

I have never gone grocerie shopping in such cold temps. That must have been interesting. I don't ride below zero. The distances and lack of people or places to warm up in case of an emergency makes it a real safety issue.

As for getting excited about riding in the cold, snow and ice... Well, I think it is a personal achievement thing with me. When I am out in the snow, the sound of the fresh snow under my wheels, the silence, and freedom of cutting fresh tracks gives me a warm fuzzy feeling! I don't know how else to put it into words. Perhaps its like my grandmother used to say, "Turn those lemons into lemonaid."
I do not participate in any other winter sports. (bad knees) So, I guess embracing mother nature in all her glory (read that moods) and overcoming the challenges they bring is what makes it so much fun.

Well, enough of my dribble.. :D Stay warm and keep rolling.

Bob

Thanks for the encouragement. I like riding a whole lot, as long as it doesn't hurt too much. My primary reasons for riding in winter are: to be more a part of my community, pollute as little as possible, exercise, and have fun( when it is fun- which is usual) . Once I tweek my coverings, I'll be able to ride when it's colder.

My favorite rides have been on ice and snow. They even beat going up and over Mt Tam, in Marin County, when I lived out there. So I'm hopeful that I will get to winter cycling nirvana, on an almost every day basis. I certainly will keep rolling and crunching over the frozen ground. I like that sound too!
