Will ride my MASI single-speed.

Rick / OCRR

She linked it for you. Mimi's Cafe is on Whittier Blvd. Mimo's Cafe is Uptown on Greenleaf. Across from the .99 store. They have outdoor tables where the walkway is to the parking lot.

Right! Don't get the two confused! It's MimO's...:)

Rick@OCRR

Either that, or I could ride my Hercules 3-Speed! That would be different.

Anyway, just did a Mapquest and it should be easy to get to/find!

We had a great ride on Monday night! Not what I would call a "social pace," and Alice didn't make it, but it was great with high-speed intervals, then long rest breaks.

It seemed like about half the riders were on fixed gear bikes, with the balance being 70's and 80's multi-speed bikes (3 Peugeots a Motobecane, an old Schwinn Madison, old Raleigh, Panasonic, Bianchi, etc.), with a carbon TREK and a Cannondale in the mix. Perfect weather for the ride though, and a good course through Whittier. I knew where I was about 1/2 the time.

Only two riders had helmets (me and one other guy), and only one rider had lycra shorts and cycling jersey. That would be me.

The fixie riders all had amazing control over their bikes, and several riders performed at the breaks, and also on the road during the ride.

Many re-group breaks though, so no one got left behind. And yeah, I was by far the oldest one there, easily twice the age of any of the other riders. No worries though, everyone was very friendly and I didn't have any trouble keeping up with the pace.

Hope to see Alice next Monday night!

Sorry I couldn't get away last night, Rick. Next week?

Sounds like a peppy pace, though...maybe I'd be draggin? :D

I'm glad that you had a good time. :)

I am almost always the oldest, too hehe ...always oldest of the females :p

but so far peeps are always welcoming

I missed the ride last night, but will definitely be there next Monday.

FYI:

The first ride of every month is planned to be faster and longer. So, next Monday we will likely ride down to Downtown Fullerton, take a 20 minute break, and ride back. This ride is roughly 25-30 miles.

Although the ride is meant to be faster... we won't leave a rider behind

If I lived closer, I'd definitely go. Yes Rick: these fixed gear riders really know how to move their bikes around. We got a taste of it when we rode with the LAFixed crowd on the Mike V benefit ride. Impressive stuff, and a darned nice group of people to boot.

Right Brian,

I was definitely impressed! Plus they were great to talk to and didn't have an attitude toward an older non-fixie person (like me!). I'm almost tempted to turn my single-speed into a fixie, but I think I'll do a few more of these rides before I take that step.

Not sure if this Old Dog could learn all those New Tricks, but then I'm not really wanting to ride backwards, bunny hop during a wheelie or lock up the back wheel and slide to a stop. Fun to watch though!

And, while some of the tricks in (and during!) traffic look dangerous (at least to me), no one fell, hit anything or got hit. Youthful reflexes are lots quicker than mine too! Fun ride though, and well worth your trip from Riverside!

Yo Alice,
Where did you find that photo?

Looks like some old guy on the 5fix2 ride! Funny looking guy, but nice bike! And check out his 50 + jersey. He must be REALLY OLD.

On the Norwalk pedestrian bridge, long about 10:00 PM.

We missed you Alice, but Jennifer said you are a really strong rider!

No nasty rumours, no. I went to the LA Fixed Page and tried to sign up, but now have to wait to be approved. What if they find out my single speed is a freewheel ?

If I'm approved, then I will look for other photos!

Hey...if she says that I'm a strong rider, that's just a nasty rumor...;):)

I'm sorry, I thought the link would take you right to the page.

After you are signed on, go to the end of the (5fix2) SPORATIC Sundays thread.

There's a video, too...:)

Thanks for the tips George and Alice,

Re: George, yes I will try no coasting, that may work! On the other hand, if anyone looks at the rear cog, the freewheel is lots fatter than the slender fixed cog. Maybe no one will look :).

Re: Alice, yes I will check out the LAFixed once I get the email saying that I'm allowed in. Hasn't happened yet, but they don't say how long it will take, so I'll just be patient.

Hope to see both of you on the ride next Monday evening!

The video makes me want to put my light back on. And flip the wheel.

Rick, they caught you coasting on the video.

You're right Frank; I am so busted :o. On the other hand, the video does capture the atmosphere of the ride, so it's all good. Plus, its a great promotional piece to get other riders to join the event.

Thanks so much for linking that in Alice!
