So, I have a late 90's XTR Rear Derailleur that came on an 8-speed MTB. I'm looking to pick up a Bianchi Volpe, which has Tiagra STI 9-speed shifters. I'm wondering if the XTR rear derailleur will work with this setup or will provide problems?

If it won't work I'll just sell the STI and pickup Barcons.

It will be ok. I am not sure that it will perform any better than the stock unit, though.

The XTR dérailleur will work fine with your Tiagra shifters. It's common for folks who live in very hilly/mountainous areas to have an MTB wide-range cassette and an MTB dérailleur on an otherwise road equipped bike.

While the der/shifter setup will work nicely, don't expect really crisp shifting but it will be fine.

I like the XTR for the range, and it seems, overall, like a better derailleur. It has aftermarket pulleys that are really nice, too. But if the Tiagra will work just as well....

I'm not in dire need of the range, either.
