I'm looking at getting a coach to help me develop a fitness plan that incorporates strength training into my cycling workout. I have already contacted a local company that seems to be very well run. The owner has identified two of his coaches as being a good match. Both are big triathlon guys because he said that they will be more knowlegable on the strength training that I am looking for than his cycling only coaches. I'm focused on cycling for now but probably triathlons in a year or two so this isn't an issue. I plan to "interview" both candidates this weekend. What should I be looking for in a coach? More specifically, what questions can I ask to determine if this is the right coach for me? How much importance should I place on coaching certifications if the candidate seems very knowledgable?

Haven't ever hired a coach myself, but since you asked, I would look for:
- good personality match - he's going to be required to call you out on occasion and there needs to be some friendship / respect for that.

- actual experience in the sport - years competing, races finished, placings, at what level etc. I would rank this equal or higher than degrees and certifications.

- references from other clients. Not only "he's a swell guy" but "my performance improved and here's the proof"

- degrees and certs. get a list, he should have a CV or website or something. Look 'em up to see what they mean. Are they 1 day seminars or for - real certifications?
