A HealthNet rider ate it pretty hard on stage 3 of the Tour de Georgia. here's the results of his crash:

See what you can identify. And see what's missing.

Would make a nice C'Dale advertisement. Hope the rider is in better shape than the bike.

Some spectator probably nabbed that top tube ASAP. That's better than a tossed water bottle or a musette bag any day.

With a polishing wheel that will buff right out.

I hope the rider is ok.

A buddy of mine just did the same thing to his Caad8. A car pulled out in front of him when was doing close to 40mph. He went over the hood and wasn't hurt but his bike is totaled - broken in 4 places. It was a pretty sweet bike too. Looks like Cannondale is going to hook him up with a cheap crash replacement.

Not sure why that story is relevant. I guess I just like to tell it.

Tell them not to toss the components, I'll take them and use them!

edit: is he ok?

How did he crash?

lordconqueror
04-26-08, 02:52 PM
he got stuck in a seam and went over the handlebars, and then a slipstream rider ran into him.

Both wheels are missing, obviously that was the cause of the accident to begin with.

Most, if not all, carbon bike manufacturers recommend riding your carbon bike with the wheels attached.

so the bike was the result of the crash and not the cause. Thats better I guess.

yeah the bike was the result of the crash.

I'd just never seen such bike carnage before.

If your racing bike looks like that after you crashed riding it the least of your worries is your racing bike.

I'm pretty sure this is mentioned somewhere in the booklet that comes with a bike , no excuses here.

The Health Net rider actually got back up and continued racing, he did require some stitches in his leg but abandoned in stage 5.

Duggan from Slipstream ran into him going about 45mph and was rushed away to the hospital, broken collar bone, broken scapula and some brain hemorrhaging. It was a pretty scary site, he went into convulsions after the wreck and it was all on camera, he was knocked out for about 5-10 minutes.I read somewhere that for awhile they thought that his career was over.

These guys are tough. Broken collar bone and scapula? Give em a week. ;)

It appears that the bike had Electric Dura Ace at one point. When was it removed and why?
Was the bike in full view after the crash up until the point in time at which the picture was taken?
I want a full investigation.

Dunno from a technical perspective, but it's interesting that both wheels "look ok" and yet 2 main frame tubes failed.

Incorrect. you will heal. eventually. your bike will not.

Every thing else aside, this photo brings up a question for me. After a crash lots of riders will get up and keep going even a situation like this where a rider is holding his head. You get a new bike but never see a rider get a new helmet which is most likely destroyed at this point.

Come on, what are the odds they'll crash again??? Not even worth thinking about.

That can mean only one thing: They don't use ZIPP.
