Picked up an old cruiser today. It's a Hawthorne from Montgomery Ward. It has a three speed kickback which is skipping from gear to gear, and slipping a bit. The hub says "Shimano, Three Speed Hub, Coaster Brake"

Anyone have some info on this hub. It doesn't seem too bad, I'm hoping I can just regrease everything and tighten it up to get it working again.

If it is a Shimano 3 speed coaster it should have a shifter and cable with it. I am not aware of Shimano having ever built a kickback shifting hub. Bendix and Sachs/Torpedo are the only two that I know of.

No such thing as a 3-speed kickback. Either 3-speed cable controlled or two-speed kickback.

The coaster arm has "Shimano 3SC" on it. I guess maybe the bike is missing the shift cable. The non-drive side of the axle is hollow, but the drive side is solid. It does seem to shift via kickback method, it just skips over 1st gear.

Okay, definitely not a kickback. I used a piece of wire hanger to shift. It seems to work okay, but I'm missing some parts.

Do I need anything other than these plus a shifter.

I know I'll need the pushrod too. I figure I can make one from an old skewer pretty easily.

Pieces and parts are mainly available thru ebay. The shifter "rod" actually has a small round head on it. Retrobicyclesupply (one of the links you have) is a great source, you can also check with an older LBS, they might have something in the back. Shimano parts aren't as easy to come by as the Sturmey Archer. The 3SC hub is a decent hub, I have flipped several bikes with that hub on it.

Any chance someone could get the dimensions of the shifter rod? I can make one easily and even harden it.

I'm gonna check with my LBS/ bike junk yard.

I just picked up a bike today with that type of Shimano hub. Here's what mine looks like:

Next Friday...when I get home:eek: Hopefully someone will be able to get to it prior to that. The rods aren't particularly expensive, just elusive.

I just picked up a bike with a similar hub. Mine is Shimano 3CC, a 3-speed coaster brake hub that shifts from the non-drive side. I pulled the shifting push rod to measure. Mine appears to be about 108 mm long, about 3 mm in diameter, and it has a head on the exterior end that's 4 or 5 mm diameter. I'll include my pictures, in case that helps, but my camera didn't seem inclined to focus on anything that close.
