Fifty Plus (50+) - Found out yesterday just what I'm up against

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

And it's actually far worse than I thought.
If you've followed my posts at all, you're well aware that I'm chronically asthmatic.
It's not exercise induced, it's not anything, it just is... all the time.
I also have pretty bad allergies and get 4 shots every two weeks.
Between that and a bunch of other stuff I keep it pretty well controlled (until last Thursday, when I just got sucker punched by something, but that's another story).
But because of my asthma, I don't get mt shots unless I pass the peak flow test.
I have to huff into a meter that measures the amount of air I can move per hours.
If I don't hit 400, I don't get my shots. 400 ML of air per hour... I don't know exactly what that means but it's not very good.

I also have to get a Pulmonary Function Test where you blow into this tube until you see stars and your knees shake. Then you do it again. And then once more.
I spoke to the allergist yesterday and she said I'm way overdue for a PFT.
My breathing is horrible and they've been too lax. They are going to take a more active approach.

Now, how bad is "bad"? I breathe at 53% of "normal". That's at best. 53% So keep that in mind when I talk about my mini climbs and how good I feel about them... 1/2 of the oxygen -with every breath- that pretty much the rest of you take in. And it still doesn't stop me.

So what did I do today? I went out and climbed the hardest climb I can take (well, the penultimate hardest climb. I won't take the hardest. Period) and did it better than I ever have before.

Hear me roar.

Wow - that's tough.

Keep up the good exercise.

I wonder how you would do at 12,000 feet?

A victory is still a victory if you gave your all to get it. Well done and good on you for not just laying down and letting this beat you.

I know I've got my own lung damage from years of acid reflux and I really notice that I get winded easily. But it's important to keep what facilities we have working as best they can by exercising it in order to keep from falling back.

As someone who has hiked along Mt Shasta (around 8,000 feet) and Mt Lassen (hiking from 8,000 to 10,000), not well, but I manage. I just take a lot of stops to catch my breath and then I'm on my way again.
