Never said I enjoyed it Hip, just came to realize that someone's got to be first and someone's got to bring up the rear. I wont always be at the back. I'm getting better, stronger and lighter, but will I ever be at the front of the A's. I doubt it, but I WILL be trying to get there. I'm sure without the flat, I'd of hung with the B's, at least thru the first loop.

On that terrain yesterday I averaged 15 something. My regular solo rides recently have been in the 17-20mph range. My 30K TT into the wind was 19.9 and the criterium in Whitnall was 18 something with the climbing and the wind ~but I was off the back massively.
I don't do hills so I was A- on this ride as stated. I can hold my own on flats with headwinds.
I'm guessing that a lot of the B's were in the 13-15mph range. They stopped a lot to wait for people giving a lot of time for recovery.

I averaged 13.4 for the 34 mile first loop. I think I heard the rest of the B's quoting around 13-13.2. iab and I kinda humped it up a bit as we knew we were behind. My normal rides and commute usually average about 15.5 - 16.5

well there were A riders and B riders, but there were way more then two or three groups. heck the so called A riders split into several groups; the three leaders, the two chasers, Cy and Jose, then me, then you and Dan and so on and so on. once i lost sight of Cy and Jose i kept looking behind hoping someone would chase me down. no one ever did. of the 43 miles i trudged on that first loop 20 had to be solo. of course there was little missed turn thing too. :D. later.

the two chasers, Cy and Jose,
Jose and I caught them on the descent down G and rode back into New Glarus with them. So the A- group finished with four riders. :D
Hip: Average speed means diddly squat on this ride. Apples to oranges to Buicks.
And Hip, I gave up my official ride navigator hat last fall, but just ask aham.... I still got directional skills when the sun is out. And love descending at 50+ with a loose rear wheel. Check it out (http://bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=6599077&postcount=27).

I chased around the four people at the front of the A group (close enough to not get lost, thank god) for most of the west loop and I was dying to keep up with them again we did the east loop. We put down 71 miles and my average speed per Garmin was 17mph.
Thanks to everyone who's wheel I sucked, you basically made my day. :D

When are you guys gonna realize....I'm not in your league on a bike.
Now, you want some advice on looking good, I'm there for you.
You want me to show up for a ride just to get dropped and lost on my own, forget it.
Now, back to the basics....
If I buy a new bike this year, Campy or SRAM?
I'm sure SRAM RED workes well with any carbon frame.

We had one dangerous moment on top of one of the hills were someone (forgot who it was) dropped his steel frame onto the pavement while we were standing, resting and waiting.
If that would have been a carbon, we wouldn't be here to post about it and you would have seen a huge mushroom cloud over Wisconsin from the explosion.

Hip, I gotta thank you for this thread.
I've been waffling on a foolhardy attempt to climb something even the pros have a hard time climbing later this August in the Georgia heat/humidity. And even after reading garysol1 and leinad's take on their 3 Gap ride (http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=6599047&postcount=1495)and subsequent to conquer it on tired legs, I realize that what Psimet has been telling me is right: I'll be kicking myself if I am near, but don't try a ride up Brasstown Bald.
Failure is probably an option, but not giving it a go to gain a tiny understanding of what it's all about will haunt me more than not making it to the top. And there is that slim chance of actually making to the top. Slim being about 2% at this point, but it's there. And there is a 98% chance of a great story, which should be worth it right there.
It's time to fail forward, Hip.
P.S. - If you still have a VCR in working order, I have a VHS copy of The Big Lebowski for you. Seriously. Let me know. Until then, you'll be out of your element.

A group 17.6 mph Leg 1, 17.9 mph Leg 2.
This thread really is funny. I thought Hip was an A group guy for sure just from reading. Keep slugging man. I've only been riding a little over 2 years and I began back off the B group and now I can usually fight near the front. Unless of course I'm with some animals. Have a good friend who's a Cat 2. We ride together once a year or so and every time we ride I get closer ... but I've still got a long way to go. At least I can make him sweat now. (Boy does that sound bad!)
Keep at it man! Failure is quitting, getting beat is merely practice and training. :)
I just added the Big Lebowski to my netflix cue.
Finally, just for the record, I lost my manhood years ago. But I have a plan to get it back. Stay tuned. ;)

That was me. But it has a carbon fork. No explosion. Weird.
FYI HipCycler: The avg speed for the B group over the whole 52 miles was a hair under 15mph.

correct.
My best ave. speed for a 50-mile ride was a 19.2
Most of my 25-35-mile rides, if they are tempo, are 17-18 ave. mph. (although not yet this spring...not enough riding in)
I can rock it.
That's not my point here I guess.
I've forgotten my point in this lengthy yet entertaining (to me at least) thread.
Oh yeah...something about riding alone vs. with others.
I guess I like a clear dividing line before joining up for a ride.
It seems the art of a social, no-drop ride has gotten a bit lost.
I want to know clearly ahead of time...is this a social event, or will there be splintering and Group "A" and Grounp "B" involved....

I'm not one to talk, since I'd be in the F group right now, but you should just show and end up riding with whoever is at your level on that day. If the group divides into 5 groups, so be it. My .02 cents.

Again, this means almost nothing when attempting to compare what you are capable of maintaining on your usual rides versus what you are capable of maintaining in a group setting under completely different terrain, weather, time of season, etc., conditions.
In our Saturday preview ride, aham and I averaged 15 mph and it was one of the most fun rides I've ever done. Average speed was completely irrelevant.

Here's the deal. You need to get the term "dropped" straightened out.
No one was dropped on this ride. iab was sweeping the whole way, as he dedicated that he would do so. He provided an excellent cue sheet and map, complete with many phone numbers in case someone did think they were lost or off course (great addition, iab!). The 'B' Group all came rolling back into New Glarus together and no one was dropped. Those who said they were "dropped" were not left behind, as iab was always behind them on the course.
A few folks who were NOT at the back of the whole group missed a turn at what could be deemed a confusing confluence of three separately named county roads. This kind of stuff happens. But those who made the wrong turn helped each other out in finding their way back on course. They did not drop each other once they knew they needed to find their way back.
No one was out to show anyone else who was going to 'drop' someone else. We knew ahead of time that there would be a faster group that would outpace many and that it was up to them to keep themselves on course, just as it was each individual's responsibility to follow the map.
I know this sounds crazy coming from me after last year's fall ride where we ran into a road that was closed, but you'll have to just trust me on this one. If you show up for a forum ride, you will not be left behind to search for sustenance or suffer frostbite.

It was definitely social, until the hill climbs came and the chatter was replaced with heavy breathing and crickets.

I was still talking on the killer last hill until the final obnoxious point where the grade kicked up again. Then I remember saying,

Well I'm sorry to say, that is just stupid, why would it matter? If you want a rotating paceline ride, join one. Otherwise, expecting people to be glued at the hip (I think botto would appreciate the irony ;)) on a social ride is just silly. Everybody has a different tempo going up a hill and certainly there are different descending "skills" (that's polite for fat guys go faster than skinny guys). You meet on the flats and chat. If you are feeling faster, you can talk to the guy front of you, if you are feeling a bit slower, talk to the guy behind you.
Getting dropped is a worry of a guy who needs to really overcompensate, so to speak. You don't believe what's shoveled on the road forum, do you?

Okay, I just HAD to jump on this thread. I never met you Hip, but I know some of these other guys (although you did only give me a second place a couple years ago for my outstanding New Orleans jersey on one of Psimet's rides:mad:). You're forgiven for that. But If I could drag my sorry a#* out to ride with these guys a couple years ago, not knowing a soul, then you need to get yerself out there. I suck, but I'm competing with ME. I've only been riding for about three years, and I didn't start so I could beat other people. I ride 'cause I like it. I ride for fun. I ride so I'll live longer. I ride so I don't have a stroke or a massive heart attack. I knowI'll never keep up with Aham, even if he had a broken leg he'd be able to drop me. But I'm lot better rider since I started riding with people better than me. I still don't drop people. If anything, I'm usually the droppee. There's quite a dropoff from the "A" riders to the "B" riders. I'm sure you could hang with the "B" group no problem. And I'm pretty sure everybody in both groups had a great time. Alright, enough said. Come out next time and just enjoy riding with other people who like to ride.:D
