It was a great day.
It was a terrible day.

I'm so confused as I fess up here my Midwest BF brothers...confused and half in the bag after almost an entire bottle of wine with dinner.

On the one hand, it was a great day of eating.
Instead of riding to the race today to see a handful of REAL men out there battling the cold wind in 40 degrees....Lord knows what the wind chill was with 25-30 mph gusting going on...I was taking care of some much-needed business regarding home repairs and spending the time in-between with Mrs. Hip.

At about the same time Psimet was fighting it out in his Cat 5 race, I was sitting in the MANCHAIR outside the petite department of Boston Store waiting for my wife to come out of the fitting room.

After the shopping we visited a new gourmet food store and brought home some of the best pulled pork I have tasted in my life.

After meeting with the electrician and the fixing the new cable TV line as needed, we headed out for round two.

After touring a condo open house we next came home with a slab of some of the best prime rib I have eaten in a long time. This is where the bottle of wine came in as well.

Then I retire to the living room to see the news about recursive crashing at his Cat 3 race. Was I there for him? No. I didn't even drive to the course to check out the bike race today. I was so disgusted with the weather and too busy with other things to care.

Now I am racked with guilt and filled with wine and top-shelf prime rib.

I may never get over the guilt of being out shopping with my wife instead of being at a bike race.

Yes, my name is Hipcycler, and I have a problem.

I believe that is the first step in the 12-step rehab process, is it not?

Man-up and join us tomorrow, there is only a 30% chance of rain.

And remember, we are meeting at Village park, not the brewery.

Nah, no worries Hip. Part of being the married/family guy. You'll have to come join me and watch the fun on the 10th in Muskego.

...when you say 10th, is that as in MAY 10?

Because that's our anniversary, and I'll be on a beach in Sanibel Island that day...the only riding will be on a rented beach cruiser!

In that case . . . I take back what I said . . . man up! :p

As far as I'm concerned, it's all good if you share the pulled pork! and say what kind of wine you had.

No time trials here, but I did my earliest-season 40 mile Ann Arbor to Chelsea round trip ride yet - fastest, too, avg 14.7 mph. Mrs Road Fan was right there, too.

Why you weren't in New Glarus today starting a ride with 21 other Bike Forums members I will never begin to understand. You missed a perfect day of riding. Heck, even recursive came out to have a post-ride lunch with us.

And Saturday? Another great day to ride. Going up 10%, 15%, and even at one short point 22% grades (per aham23's Garmin) into and with 25-30 mph winds was fun as could be.

Maybe your wife can take you shopping for some manhood. I hear they have them at the outlet mall, but they might be in irregular sizes.

shame shame shame. :(

You see...you've helped me to realize I'm more of a man than all of ya. Thank you for the ball busting. It takes a real man to be honest about himself, knowing he's gonna take ****e for it.

Bring it on I say! I can take it. As Chicago sang, I'm a man yes I am...

Oh, and while you were busy drinking beer named after something that should be ground into a fine chuck, I was busy dropping freds today on my own.

I've become like the George Thorogood of cycling...."I ride alone"

*sniff* how sad.

Naw...not really. I just slow you guys down anyway.

YOU sir.
My compliments.

I'm sorry I wasn't there to give you a hollar from the sidelines yesterday.

Looks like John Wilke got some nice shots. You looked cold out there (Big surprise)....
So you goofed by getting pinched outside the cones early on, or were you forced out there and then had to wait?

Sage23

Thank you for the ball busting.

That's what we're here for! :D :D :D

Psimet2001

I was fine up the hill near the front on the outside and it narrows with conce and I made it around the corner with the group then heard the sounds of carbon hitting carbon . Inside and outside guys were fine, but the center was getting squeezed. I saw a wheel get kind of sideways and then I got bumped.

I jumped to the other side of the cones and rode along side. It was so tight there with the field being that size that it was like trying to shove 20lbs of crap in a 10lb bag. There was no room for me to get back in except at the back.

Let me tell you I was heart broken (not).

Soon to be available in 10 x 14 or 16 x 20 printable sizes! (without the text of course) Or ... you could even have Walgreens make a wall clock with this image. Talk about Bike Forums memorabilia! :)

Yeah, I was wondering where all the other kids are playing?

At their lake houses or at the mall, probably.

Hey, there is shopping and great dining in New Glarus, you know. You would have enjoyed one or possibly both with your wife.

:p

Never mind.

Is there an OLD Glarus?

I'm getting the Psimet coffee mug with that picture on it.

The dude abides.....whatever that means. I heard someone who's about 23 say that in our newsroom the other day. I assume it's a good thing, because I meant it as such. Psimet rocks for making that trip and towing the line in that weather.....and did I mention the weather guy that night reported gusts of OVER 50 mph!
You da man in my book now.

"Obiviously you don't golf."

Have you never seen The Big Lebowski?

Holy sheesh, you gotta get out more, man. Or at least have Netflix bring the outside world to you.

And there is nothing to get about the statement. The Dude abides. That's all you need to know.

Go rent it tonight. Better yet, stop at BestCircuitBuyCity and buy a copy.

I go more for emotional romantic comedies....Under the Tuscan Sun ring a bell?
I like to watch it while shaving my legs and making out my mall shopping list.

You've just lost your Man Card. The orderlies will be by shortly to take you to reprograming camp, where there is nothing on the TV's but ESPN and Judd Apatow movies.

Scummer

Wow... just wow.

Kimbercop

Wow Hip. Things seem to be rapidly going downhill for you here. It's gonna take alot for you to get that man card back. No Big Lebowski??? Your lake house a cave w/o electricity??? Jeez thats about as big of sin as you could commit. Well, besides blowing off the forum rides :D

It's a lake house for God's sake....a place in the country on a lake to get away from it all.
No electronics allowed.

When are you guys gonna realize....I'm not in your league on a bike.

Now, you want some advice on looking good, I'm there for you.
You want me to show up for a ride just to get dropped and lost on my own, forget it.

Now, back to the basics....
If I buy a new bike this year, Campy or SRAM?

Kimbercop

A real nature retreat huh?? Good for you, but trust us, some day when you're bored, get the Big Lebowski. It's well worth it..

CyLowe97

Just up the road from nowhere? Closest neighbor is 10 miles away where the dirt road ends and the single track to your yurt in the woods begins?

Wait, was it take a left when I hear the banjos, or was it take a right?

Oh please,, I'm in a league of my own, well below the abilities of the rest that were there yesterday. It's probably a good thing I flatted at mile #2 otherwise I'd have slowed the B's down significantly, especially on the climbs. I always ride sweep, just usually not by choice.

And what kind of quastion is that, Campy of course, jeez (again):D

Hipcycler

Kimber....I take it Psimet helped with the flat then?
That sucks....that early in a ride too...ouch.

CyLowe97

Kimber....I take it Psimet helped with the flat then?

Yeah, he's the only one who knows how to change a tube out.

 ;)

SRAM is the new Campy.

I wish...that would mean that damn boat landing wouldn't be next to me.
You know, when you live your life five days a week in the pubic eye, privacy becomes like gold my friend.
Now, if I wasn't in the middle of a show right now I;d come up with a funny line about a purdy smile....

You have just committed a crime. Repent for your transgressions.

Kimbercop

Hip, Actually iab was there for the assist. Psimet was at the front and I was squarley near the rear. Most of the group didnt know I flatted cause I was so far back. iab was a true gentleman and rode with me until we caught back up to the group. Psimet was the one who showed me how "wrong" that tire/tube install was. So he took it off a couple weeks ago to show me the "right" way to set up a tube/tire (see Psimets tip of the day #3 I believe). Hmmm, quite fishy actually. I think there might be some shinnanigans going on around here. I am after all a trained investigator:rolleyes:

There is no "new campy". There is only campy, and those who wish they were campy (like I know anything)

WHAT?

aham dropped?

What, you think I'm an idiot now?
There's no way that really happened.

Kimber..maybe....not you.

And Kimber if that was the case (you were alone at the back) I'd be happy to ride with you that way.

Hey...where did you come from?
Shouldn't you be just back from a doctor's office with a cast on and trying to figure out how to masterbate with the other hand?

i thought you were too busy with your show to come up with some funnies? :D.

i was dropped. i was left in nomans land between the As & Bs.

i was lost. the Navigator rode out of my sight and i quickly proceeded to make a wrong turn. it was like i couldnt wait to get off course .

dropped and lost. it happens.

I was reading Event Service's book Roadie and came across a passage about Roadie's innate fear of being dropped and the sickening anticipation of the tempo pickup and the ensuing pain it will cause.

I laughed so hard and thought about the ride yesterday. I was chatty Cathy on the way out knowing, "I better talk now while I still have some breath." Just the anticipation of the dropping and the pain was probably one of the more thrilling parts of the ride.

Hip....I suck. I always have sucked, but I spent the better part of 20 years not riding ultra distances or racing because I knew I sucked. One thing I figured out over time is that I was right....I was going to suck as long as I never did anything about it.

Now that I've gone back out and tried racing again I know that there is no way in hell that anyone will ever get ready for a race without just doing it.

Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right.

I know you'll never race, but you still want to go fast with other riders and feel like a part of the group. Everyone does. Again to draw on Roadie being dropped is like an instant nullification of your abilities and all of the time spent "training" or riding hard. That's what keeps you from coming out and joining in - that and the fact that it wasn't originally your idea. ;)

I just told everyone who asked (and there were more than a few - "why the f wouldn't hip come out and ride when it's in his backyard?") that the fear of being dropped by anyone even slightly heavier than you with a mismatched kit riding a bike that had less than 10 speeds or was more than a few years old was enough to keep you at home...warm and safe.

Psimet2001

I prefer to think of it as the "A-" group. I was in the same vicinity, but had the wisdom to pull out the cue sheet and consult with DanWilliams.:p:D

No, I will never race in a crit....can't. Too dangerous with the hip....never gonna happen...it's got nothing to do with anything else.

Now, fast group rides, that's another story.

Hip, you just need me there on a ride to make you feel safer about getting dropped. I suck, I know it and accept it, but I'm trying. I'm 6'02 245 (down from 280 01-01-08). I cant hang with these guys. I try but realize my limitations. On flats and small rollers I'm strong enough for awhile but throw any elevation gain in and I'm history. Gravity hates the big man (except down grade). I just sucked it up and never stopped pedaling yesterday but it took me a looonnngggg time to make those climbs. I'm used to riding alone at the back. The longest ride of my life is 54 miles, which I will top this year but I still have a long way to go and realize I will never be in a class with any of those riders from yesterday. I was happy to stay behind Jose Perez up to the first climb realizing that was the last I'd see of those guys until the brewery tour or dinner.

You just need to make it to the next one, I'll always be there, at the rear, but still pedaling along. I could use some company, but you'll be faster than me too, but thats OK with me. I'm fine with that.

Yeah HIP...and don't forget your man-purse. Not your wife's purse. That one has your balls in it. I mean the one you keep your skirt in.

Hipcycler

I rode with Jose Perez on that same ride when CyLowe got us lost. Strong rider. They all are...
Unlike you, I get no joy from riding alone off the back of a group ride. To me, that's just riding alone, which I already enjoy doing.

Hipcycler

Me?

Hipcycler

Oh, I guess you WERE talking to me...

Well, it depends.
I have two man-purses. My good leather one and my rain day cheap one.

I've never worn a skirt.
Shants, yes.
