I picked up this new road bike on EBay for $290.00 + $35 shipping.

Haven't a clue if it will fit me well, but hope it might.

Anyway, if it does, or if I can dial it in, I will feel fine about throwing it in the back of my hatchback for an hour's ride after teaching in place of the heavy mtn bike I am using now, and I can save the Lemond BA for longer and better rides.

If not, I will sell it locally. Shouldn't be too hard to get my money out of it!!

I plan on keeping the toe clips, as when I ride after teaching I generally just pop on some shorts and ride in my tennies!

A 58cm frame from a stand-over perspective means you have approx a 33inch inseam.

Yeah, I know.

I suspect it may be a bit big, but I am riding a Lemond 57 cm right now.

Standover height doesn't bother me a lot on a road bike, as long as I can get on it. Most importantly will be upper torso (which is long) and my short legs! I am 6 feet tall.

I will just have to see if it works for me!!

If not, I know I can sell it in the hot Denver Bike Market next spring pretty easily for at least what I paid for it, or maybe a bit more.

Thanks.

Well, I know that it is not "top-notch" (Sora and all). But, I plan on using it for only short after work one-hour rides, and cramming it in the back of my hatch back is something I haven't done, and won't do, with my Lemond.

You are correct that position is more important that if the jewels will be in trouble :)

Could be a 58 is good for you esp because you already know your torso and legs.

Keep us informed when you get the bike!

Denver, don't get too fixated on the idea that you can only ride ONE SIZE. After riding your new bike for a while you may discover that a 58cm is just what you have always needed.

Yes. Actually, the mtn bike I am riding was never "sized" except to see if I had 2" stand-over clearance and adjusting the seat height. That was it. I now have 8,000 miles including a Ride the Rockies on it with absolutely no problems to my body.

Well, I got the bike today, assembled it this evening, and went for a ride around the block in the dark.

I am extremely pleased. The stand-over height is exactly the same as my current Lemond BA, and iT seems to fit pretty well. I need (but not urgently), a 1 inch wider bar, and the seat-end of stem is 1" shorter, so might get a longer extension on the stem. The stem is adjustable in height, which is just right for what I want it for.

I am going to keep the platform pedals, and may or may not put the toe clips on.

After I adjusted the height of the seat to what felt and seemed correct, I measured the center of the BB to the top of the seat and then compared it to my Lemond, and they were EXACTLY the same!!

As I mostly want a run-around bike for 15-20 MILE short rides after work, and one I can easilY put in the back of my hatch back, and one I won't cry much over if it is stolen or damaged, I think this bike fits the bill just fine!

yep. Expensive, but fun :-)

That's why my NewYear's Resolution this year is going to be "NO MORE GOLF" so I can have more money for bicycling.

I'm thrilled :D

Got out my most Freddish outfit today (tennis shoes with double white socks, old Big Dog loose shorts over UNDERWEAR, an old long-sleeved single color Jersey with a HOOD, and an old helmet - and since I don't have my wedge, bottle holder or frame pump yet, an old back pack filled with what I needed) and took my new $290 bike for a 20 mile ride.

It was great.

Fit perfectly, tracked well, rode nicely. Raised the seat 3/8 inch during the ride

This will be perfect for what I got it for - after-school 20 mile trail rides where I take the bike and throw it in the hatch back.

I will keep the platform pedals, but I think I will go ahead and install the toe clips. (My feet kept wanting to unclip as I was stopping.)

I still need a 1" wider bar, but that is solvable. The Sora worked great, but needs just a minor adjustment in the lowest gear. I really like the seat.

Never thought I could get so much bike for so little money.

I just got around to looking more closely at my wheels, and discovered they are 36 spoke wheels!

Now, why would they put a 36 spoke wheel on as standard on a road bike? These are "AlexrimsRP15F"

http://www.alexrims.com/oe/index.htm

700C " (622mm x 16mm)
26" x 1.0" (559mm x 16mm)

Holes:
32 / 36

Colors:
Silver

Nothing wrong with 36 spokes. The wheels will last longer and the difference in weight is really pretty small.
