If I bike in the rain, I ride a set of crappy trails here that are covered in woodchips. If I ride the other trails around here, I just make nasty ruts and increase erosion. Try to ride rocky trails, woodchipped trails, sandy trails, or do a putrid road ride AAARGHHH.

I usually dont ride in the rain simply because of traction issues.

?
What do you do when it's icy?

Ice is different, ice is only in patches, but mud is everywhere. I usually dont ride when its too icy either though...

I ride in the rain so long as the trail won't be damaged. There are trails that hold up well even wet and there are trails that rut up with every passing bike. I'll do fire roads and some double/tripple track without much hesitation.
I think it's fun. Dress right (so you stay comfortable) and go out and have a muddy, wet good time.
Wouldnt know how the XC trails hold up here, but the DH runs tend to bounce back pretty well.

They let horses on most of the trails around here. As long as horses are allowed you might as well ride in the rain skidding and spinning all over the place.

We are not allowed to ride the trails in the rain. I have not been able to ride in months. I'm always jealous of folks able to ride a trail that's not rock hard. Some nice tacky loamy soil would be great........... not going to happen though. Don't even get me started on winter. You might as well hang the bike up for three four months. Those trails will be C L O S E D!
To the picture above: I feel your pain. Nevegal's pick up mud like it's a crime to have it on the ground.
Alot of the bike trails around my town have a fine gravel put down, though, not dirt, so it doesn't get muddy. Even then, the dirt's consistency isn't right in most places, so unless you're on unfamiliar trails, you're safe. I love biking in the rain, especially racing. Its an amazing feeling.
The trails here aren't actually mountain biking trails, in fact, noone knows about the best trails except the wino's who use them to hide and drink once the sun goes down. Makes for great technical stuff, and you don't have to worry about destroying them.

i tend to avoid trail riding in the rain since that's when they're likely to get chewed-up.
we have enough trouble as it is maintaining our access rights with the hikers, birdwatchers, and horse people.

Yes and no. If it starts raining when I'm already out, then yes, I ride in the rain. Or, it it is only lightly raining then I will. It it is heavily raining then I usually will not. I don't mind getting wet or muddy, but it does do a number on the trails.

Riding in the rain is frowned upon here in Austin. It's not like it rains much here anyway, but when it does and someone rides in it, the ruts are like fossils that remain all Summer long because it don't f***ing rain here from June thru September.
When I lived in Michigan people rode in the rain because it f***ing rained every other day. Ruts were just a factor that you always had to deal with.
So you gotta think about where you live and what is generally acceptable. If it's not acceptable and you're thinking about doing it anyway, just think about all the mud you'll be cleaning out of your bike afterward and maybe that will dissuade you.
