Lets get a list going of the many uses for baskets (back and front baskets!) that can be stickied at the top for everyone! Try and get uses that haven't been listed, I'll keep this post updated with all the suggestions people have!

I haven't done it...yet, but a quickly removable front basket with a bit of weight in it would make an excellent weapon...swung up against some one's head:D;)

A removable basket could be carried into a store an used as a shopping basket, then used in place of a bag to carry out purchases, then put right back on the bike for the trip home.

I went out from the office to pick up a pie for an office treat, and transported it back in the classic milk crate attached to my rear rack.

My classic milk crate holds my homemade LED tail lights.

One could use a basket to carry a larger battery, like a sealed lead-acid battery, for a homemade light setup.

Flip it over and use it as a seat on the ground.

Fridays trip home after work:
school books
Thai food
used cuckoo clock
work clothes

I just thought of a bunch more, because I live so close to a beach (another reason for a bike for me, in biking distance of it, and a major bike trail!)

Beach stuff (towels, sunscreen, toys for kids)
Picnic basket and blanket :)
Beach toys
Or how about a boogie board? :D

A rack to dry a sweat-soaked shirt on a sunny day.
A place to put your tuxedo when you're smart enough not to wear it for a 10+ mile ride (just another incarnation of work clothes, but I like bragging about it anyway).
EDIT: Oo, a musical instrument! You can get a whole bunch of different sounds if you hit it with the right things.

I use mine to carry 12 fast pitch softballs to the field, then use it to hold the balls as I pitch to my daughter.

i used mine this morning to carry 3 months accumulation of recyclables to the recycling place. it worked better than i thought :)

I made a cloth bag with handles that fits inside and over the top edges of my front basket. I can quickly take it out and into a grocery store and then out and into the house when I get home.

I currently use velcro straps to attach to my 30kg-capable rear rack a cheap Bell basket I obtained from K-mart -- fairly sturdy, not all that removable, so I leave it attached for months at a time. This is just until I can find someone who sells the Rixen & Kaul klickfix carrier adapter and retro-fit coupling (http://www.klickfix.de/gtae.htm). With a few extra couplings attached to a few different things I could easily attach/detach whatever I wanted. Neat system.

I go shopping with my current setup all the time, sometimes with so much stuff that I have to use a motorcycle-style elastic net with hooks to keep it from dislodging during transit. Of course I take my own shopping bag. Pizza I have not yet transported, but that is only because at the local pizza joints they don't yet offer an option 'folded' for how I'd like my pizza prepared.
