So i am planning a 5 day trip this summer. It will be my first tour. I am thinking of riding the Blue Ridge Parkway from Afton, VA to near White Top, VA and then taking the Virginia Creeper Trail to Abington.
Im just not sure if the Va Creeper would be cool on a road style touring bike (Surly crosscheck). Does any one have any experience with this?

You will not have any problem riding a cross check on the creeper but, go as wide as possible with your tires. You should also try to hit it during the week to avoid the crowds.
Yeah no problem with a touring style bike. I did it last year on my 520 with 35's.
Did it last year on 25's, no problems.

The VA Creeper is a great little trail and both Abingdon and Damascus are very nice in their own distinct ways. Abingdon is considerably larger offering lots of history and restaurants. I stayed at the Mt. Roger's Outfitters' Hostel (in Damascus) which offers private rooms for securing your goods and hot showers. And you'll have no problems with road tires. I used 700c x 32 without the least bit of difficulty. Enjoy! Sounds like an awesome tour.

I live in Abingdon. You should work a show at the Barter into your trip. It's world class theater! Go have lunch at Zazzy'z, Allison's, the Barter Cafe, or the Trail Cafe (very near the Creeper trailhead). There are too many dinner options to list, and they all seem to be fairly good. The best coffee in town is at Zazzy'z by far.
Oh, and avoid the Highlands Festival unless you're willing to put up with crowds and are planning well in advance. It lasts for two weeks or so at the end of July/beginning of August.
