Hi everyone,

When I first bought my bike, I got a triple on the basis that there were some pretty tough climbs around and I may as well have the granny gear just in case. However I have only used it about three times and that was mainly when unfit. I also after a bit upgraded the big chain ring from 52-42-30 to a 53-42-30. The problem I find now is that the shifting isn't as reliable as I'd like. I don't know whether that's because a 53-30 is just asking too much. It needs a lot of regular maintenance to keep both the 53 and 30 happy and then the gear options always feel quite restricted despite the 4 point selection on the ultegra levers.

I would also like to start doing more time trials on this bike and would like the option of running bigger chaingrings e.g. 54/55. I feel this would be way too big to run on the triple and expect to still be able to use the 30.

My plan however is not to buy loads of replacement bits, i.e. new cranks, BB, short cage derailleur, shifters, but just to set the bike up so the triple can not be used. Would there be any problems with this?

Thanks for any help,

Simon
I've tried setting the max and min limits on the front derailleur so it only uses the outer two chain rings and hopefully steps in 4 small steps between these two. However the steps seem a little erratic. Is this because say each push of the lever makes the derailleur shift say 0.5cm, which might be fine for 2cm of movement for triple, but when the limit is set to 1.2 then it can screw up? Is there a reason why I shouldn't set my triple levers to work just over the double range?

You can make it work the way you have already tried but the fact is it just will not work well. Doubles are designed to be doubles and triples triples. Sadly there is little middle ground. An actual double crankset, shorter bottom bracket, and double front mech will give you a lot more shifting pleasure and a better chainline so everything will run smoother than with the triple. Invest in some bits, you will be glad you did.
