Long time no see for me on this forums but i got triggered again today. A friend of me bought a Benotto for only 25 euro's. I wanted to see it for myself and he lives just a block away so I payed him a visit.

The Benotto has no model name stickers on it. The frame was in good condition (wouldnt call it excellent, but fairly nice). It's blue. One of the seat tube stickers says Paris - Roubaix. I assume someone (moser perhaps*) won that race on a benotto.

The 6 speed group is Ofmega / Modolo. Braking claws are modolo, levers etc are Ofmega. Derailleurs too. They are all black and most of them are made out of plastic (yikes). The last owner threated the bike well because no rust to be found and braking/shifting is pretty ok. Rear derailleur needs some cleaning but that's part of the deal. The bike got a serial number stamp on the bottom bracket but forgot to write it down.

Because of the plastic Ofmega group I would guess it's an entry level bike. One clue might be the hubs. They are Shimano hubs and have yearcode E# (forgot the month code). So that would be 1980. My guess is they replaced the wheels because the bike seems to be older than that (6 speeds, very old looking brake claws, etc).

I had an Ofmega crankset on my MTB once but didnt know they made entire groups until today. Funny to see.

The downtube shifting levers are plastic and curved in a funny way :)
The braking levers are wired under the handlebar tape. That is modern in some way. Never saw modolo (of ofmega i forgot) levers before. The braking cable runs over some kind of pully inside the lever. Still pretty responsive.

ps. I didn't find anything resembling on Bulgier. I would classify the bike even below the 1500 amateur corso I think.

Could it be a 800 or 850?

pics will follow: UPDATE: pics and serial no in new post below

*did some afterwork and Moser won PR in 1976 indeed. Check out this nice video of his bike: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qI6lvKVUKcM

My guess is that it's probably an entry level 800 or 850.
But good news is: considering that you got in Europe, it is probably made in Italy?
The components might not be stock and was a replacement.
Nonetheless, I've always been a fan of Benottos. Just my two cents.

yeah it went through my mind the group perhaps wasn't original. I didnt find this combination on other Benotto's.

funny, the mexico-italy discussion with bianchi's and benottos. For us in Europe it's not an issue at all (at least i can't imagine mexican bikes were imported above italian production). On the other hand we have some Japanese import I think.

I'm guessing 800 , 850 as well...quite possibly 1000. Nothing higher than 1500. Gruppo might be original - would be more likely if this is a "Made in Italy (or Europe)" bike.

The fork and crown indicates something less than a Modelo 2000...less than Ishiwata 019 tubing.

Hi-Ten, Zeta, Aelle is what is probably in play here...

Looks nice...and I love that very tight rear triangle geometry.

Nothing more from me concerning the frame, but as to the components: I have *heard* that the scary plastic Ofmega derailleurs actually are longer lasting than the other infamous plastic bits (Simplex) because Ofmega used a much better plastic material than the Simplex Delrin. YRMV.
The shifters and brake levers look very similar to the Modolo Kronos items, but the calipers themselves are no plastic Kronos (which is good, since they are not admired for performance) but are rather regular Molodos like Flash or Speedy.
Crank looks like a variant of the Ofmega Mistral, but with a cheaper finish than I've seen and *possibly* a smaller BCD.
