Fifty Plus (50+) - Went By the Bike Shop and Would You Believe?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I go into a very large bike shop way to many times every week. If I'm not picking up parts I am kicking tires and looking at the new CF Mountain Bikes and Road Bikes and joking with all of the guys. I'll let them remain nameless for which you will see why in a minute.

I went in the other day and the manager looked at me and said. Hey, everyone gets along with you so well and you are here so much why don't you come to work part time? Sounded like fun and a way to take a break from the stress of starting a new company and putting in way to many hours a day.

Trust me - I am no expert (An expert is nothing more than a drip under pressure. Author Unknown. Source US Army WOCS) so I will not be pontificating advice or recommendations on equipment or ?????

I think it will be fun and I thought about posting "A Day in a Bike Shop" once a week or so. Interesting experiences that I am sure will arise waiting on the general public especially when it comes to bicycles.

I am sure that the wrenches, who are really nice kids, will give me the opportunity to learn a bunch about repairs and maintenance.

If you like new stuff then see if they will extend you the "shop form" price on bikes & components. If you don't like new stuff then see if you can get it for the rest of us...

Unless the pay is great or you are just looking to fill your day with something to do, I would think it a pain in the arse. I love my LBS but have been in there too many times when they were dealing with knuckleheads.

Sounds like fun. I read somewhere that if you've ever dreamt of "owning a little bike shop" you should try working part time at one for awhile.

As for "a day in the bike shop," here's what one of the better wrenches in Seattle wrote about a typical summer day in my LBS....

Quote from a Typical Summer Day:

"and the only thing north of the equator was a delightfully tiny, pale-blue bikini top. And, I’m not kidding, she smelled of massage oil. Alright, then.

Somewhere in my brain there was a multi-car pile-up."

If this is you we all have a totally messed up perception of you. Pic's Please

And DG was worrying about the white gloves. Did I mention this is S. California.

You could hang around long enough until a good deal comes around, then jump on it and quit :D

What I meant was, I'm the guy who stops by the shop and wants just a "little thing" taken care of....

Figured this was going to be a n + 1 story. Did think it would be a bike and not a job.

The biggest problem that I've noticed about working in a bike shop is that when you are working, your buddies are out riding, like Saturday mornings for example. Seriously, I've known a lot of good bike riders that quit riding when they got a bike shop job.

As a UCLA grad student, I worked Friday nights and all day Saturdays at Bikecology. Since I start my recreational rides at first light, during much of the year I had time for a 2-, sometimes 3-, hour ride before work. Since the shop was closed Sundays and I attended church Sunday evenings, Sunday morning was my prime time for longer rides, including centuries as Grand Tour training.

As an undergrad, I worked at Henry Radio, a local purveyor of electronic components, audio equipment, and ham radio gear. One of the guys worked Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6 to 9 p.m. to qualify for the employee discount on merchandise and as a "hobby night out with the boys."

Work has this way of getting in the way of riding.
