Foo - Biker=cyclist cyclist=biker ?? big wheel biker.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Just wondering if cycling for any of us crosses over to being a biker. Like motorcyclist.
Anyone have a bike and a BIKE?
For some reason I had this wild idea after talking with a few people of selling my car and getting a ninja 250r for the way more awesome MPG..
If you have a vroom vroom bike, post it up.
2 wheels always good? or must it only be human powered 2 wheeled?

used 1kish. So tempting to sell my car.
A good cyclist makes a good biker (where cyclist == bicycle operator, and biker == motorcycle operator.)
I want to get a motorcycle eventually, but first, I want to take good safety courses to be able to handle stuff like rain, gravel while dealing with drunk rednecks in a pickup trying to knock me off the bike, Kurgen style.

Skill on two wheels is skill on two wheels.
Pheard, I think you'll find that many cyclists also ride motorbikes. I attribute my descending skills (as opposed to my horrid climbing) to growing up riding dirtbikes in the CA desert. Although I don't presently have a motorbike...I'd like one too.
One discipline does not preclude another.

Sell your car and buy it. I'm tempted to get a license and get one, except the whole no money thing. A few of my college friends got motorcycles to replace their cars and never looked back.

My only hang up is the refusal of my GF to ride on the back of it. The blue book value of my car seems to be able to cover a used bike easily.
For some reason the idea of us going on a date or to church while she's wearing a dress seems really nice.

I don't blame her.
Get a dirt bike or dual purpose bike, the equivalent of a mountain bike, not that piece of crap road bike.
I'm curious, what is a dual purpose bike exactly?
I was told that instead of a crotch rocket a dual purpose bike would be better.
I'm not sure. Ask CrankshaftYQX, he probably knows.

In all seriousness here, before you get a motorcycle, you need to find your local AMA chapter or even Harley dealer and take a basic motorcycle rider's course. They run $200-300 or so and they provide you with the bike to use.
A motorcycle isn't a bicycle and you could easily kill yourself and your GF. And, to be blunt, I'm not sure you're mature enough to have a sportbike. If you want to go with a motorcycle, go for a standard style or even a small cruiser. Once you get a few miles under your belt, then go for the sport bike if you want one.
If you must go for a sport bike, then the 250 is a good size to start with.
But whatever you do, GO TAKE A BASIC RIDER COURSE FIRST!!

Yea the course here is actually I think 150$
It's required to get a license in the state of Ca if I'm not mistaking. I completely understand you're comment about the maturity thing, luckily the 250cc engine only has a 100mph max speed. I was telling my friend today who also wants a ninja 250r that if the bike could go 150+mph, I would promptly get on 280 during the least traffic and test it's max speed. I'd much rather just go for the bike I'd want rather than getting something else.

It's required to get a license in the state of Ca if I'm not mistaking. The MSF course is $250, and while not required to get a license, if you take and pass the course, you don't have to get a permit or take a skills test at the DMV. It'll get you discounts on insurance, too.

Someone told me the course right down the street is less than 200. Possibly different places cost less.

I just bought an '02 Ninja 500 from a friend this weekend (silver, not powder-puff). My main motivation was fuel mileage, but I've always wanted a bike. I'll have an 18km-each-way commute to my summer job as a MTB patroller (up a twisty ski hill access road that has new pavement - yay!), and between my roadie and the Ninja, I hope to spend very little on gas. This fall, I'll be moving to Calgary and commuting 15km each way between the city and a heli flight school out at Springbank airport.
It's my first (motor)bike. I'm a shortarse, so the Ninja works really well for me. I'd love to have a dual-sport, as I have a couple friends who ride KLR650's and whatnot, but I'd need to do a LOT of mods to get my 5'2" arse to be able to reach the ground :D
Now, I just need a decent beater car for the un-rideable days of winter. If I could figure out a way to safely carry my road bike on the Ninja, it'd be cooler than a puppy, a fire truck and free beer combined.

I have a buddy here that used to weld for Yeti, Brew and a few other framebuilders. He set his BMW up to carry a single roadbike and has driven it two states away for events. It can be done.

The most I carried on a motorcycle at once without side bags (just bungee cords) was two paint cans, a bowling ball, a huge stuffed unicorn (big enough for a child to sit on), a huge bag of cat litter and a large pizza.
That was a lotta fun.

Yep. Running errands and getting dinner on the way home. :)
Hmm, wonder if you could get a motorcycle with a sidecar, and use that for moving your bike.
http://www.texassidecars.com is one place that can do custom sidecars if you have an existing ride.

Only mod I have done so far is the fender eliminator (not pictured). Also ordered Puig double bubble windscreen. Next is PC3, removing the secondary flies, and exhaust.

1984 CB450SC Honda Nighthawk. This is my first bike, I took the rider's course in March (best money I've spent, IMO). I also bought myself a full face helmet, armoured riding jacket and good riding jeans. I went with the 450 because its older, simple, cost $10 to fill and that gets me over 200kms to a tank. Plus, it costs all of $27 a month to insure.
I loves me some two wheeled toys.

How crazy is this....I was at work yesterday talking to my capt ( He rides) saying how i'm thinking about getting my license and all, and then I come home and read this thread. I don't want a sport bike though, I was looking at a bmw gs1200. He used to have one and said there great, but not for a first bike....I tell you, I'm really digging supermotto bikes, I may go that way actually....

Just out of curiosity, have you checked on insurance? You may be surprised and quickly decide against owning one. Some people pay $200 - $500 a month to insure a crotch rocket. At your age and with no experience I doubt you are going to get by cheap.

You guys got cheap insurance down in the states. Up here in Canada, its murder. I was talking to one of the younger guys in my motorcycle course. Dude's 18 (I"m 33, BTW) and he's got a 750R I believe? His first bike and it cost him something like 10 G's for a year of insurance:eek:. I have no idea how he affords it, but there you go.
Also, $480 a month is way more than I pay for two cars, a bike and a house.

Sweet. I love the bike. I'm missing it right now; its been in the shop for four days waiting on fork seals. The parts won't be here until Wednesday at the earliest. Sucks, I wanna go riding.

I had to shop around quite a bit to find my insurace for $465 a year. The rest of my quotes were $1,300 to $3,800 a year. These bikes aren't known to be insurance friendly.
Owned and rode a Sportster about 10 yrs ago, kinda fun tagging along with the ex - and a club. Zat count? :D
Ooooo and had a mtb and a jeep set up with a nice lift kit, full roll cage and some big mudders for those off-road experiences. :D

Pheard...the new Ninja 250 is a great first bike. THe redesign this year added a ton of great features to that bike. And....being a 250cc bike the insurance should be very reasonable as long as you have a good driving record. Take a motorcycle safety course before you buy one though. Best thing you could do for yourself. I got the chance to ride the new 250 just a couple weeks ago...very spirited bike for the size. I've always been a Suzuki guy..but the new baby Ninja is a very nice ride indeed.
LowCel... nice Kawi! It will look sweet with the new exhaust on it. Not that it needs to have any more power than it already has.:p:eek:

Street-legal dirtbike. Lights, plates, signals, and slightly taller gearing.
Pretty well will suck on the highway though, especially one bought for the price of that Ninja.

That's what I hear, for the price range it's a perfect entry level bike. It's not too big and seems to be a somewhat affordable price for a sports bike.
Just curious, what's the max speed on you're suzukis?

Don't forget to add in gear to your motorcycle budget.
Oh, also, you might consider a used 250 instead of a new one. I know there is a lot of redesign on the new one, but the used one will save you on insurance, and you won't feel so bad when you drop it. I agree it is a good choice for a starting bike.

Kind of off topic but just a little tidbit of information. The companies have a gentleman's agreement that the max speed from the factory on all Japanese bikes is 187 mph (300 kph). However, a lot of them won't reach that speed. Still interesting information. Also, the speedometer on most bikes are off 6% - 10%. To correct them it is necessary to but a speedohealer. The speedohealer can also be adjusted to allow some bikes (Suzuki Hayabusa and Kawasaki Ninja ZX14) to go over the 200 mph mark. ;)

Another way to get the actual speed is with a GPS.
