Just do somethin like this...

Cheap set of $7 collapsable headphones from target. removed the top head band from the set. the adustable drop bars are still there just retracted fully. slipped them out the top of the helmet help route the wires. I bound the remaining halfs togther and then bound the setup to the visor. Then, took the jack end of the wire and ran it out the back of the helmet. Ipod is held in a neoprene armband. Enough wire is used up by routing it through the helmet and the speakers being up at the front that there isn't much to get caught anywhere in back for the short wire that exists on these. Although if the wire is longer than wanted you can wrap it around the ipod band. The soft wire of typical headphones will easily snap in any accident where they catch on something firm. I still need to find a nicer way to attach them to the visor. White wire ties look very cheap.

The Pro's..
Doesnt' block sound from the outside world nearly as bad as having them on your ears.
Incentive to wear your helmet if you dont already.
Ride with music.
No chance for them to fall off and get wrapped up in the chain/gearing.

The Con.
Possible shortend life of headphones as you have to run the ipod's volume very high to get good sound level.

very cool idea! i do like seeing people try to move away from wearing headphones on the ears.. it's dangerous if you can't hear anything!

Thanks, and with the sound in front of you; you ride into it.

Set the iPod's EQ to "bass reducer" (or whichever setting it is) to help keep from overdriving the headphones.

You've patented/copyrighted this, right? ;)

I'll look into that, thanks. Didnt even think to adjust the EQ! without the headphones being close to the ears alot of bass is lost as it is.

can you do this with a Zune also?

the headphone mounting or the bass reduction? Headphone mounting deal can be done with anything as its just a standard set of headphones with a normal jack.

!!!!
That's so cool! I really should try that! I've been avoiding headphones (not just while cycling) for a long time since my hearing isn't great anyway, so that's perfect for me!

The stereo from Nashbar looks cool, too, but a pair of headphones is cheaper.

I tried bringing music along when riding for a while.
The easiest & best way was to just wear earbuds, and keep the volume turned way down.
This allowed me to hear the music, but it was in the background of ambient noises. And running the volume way low conserves your music player's power too.

Yea I know it's not legal many places,,, -but it does work the best. I don't usually ride with music, but will if I am going on a long ride as it does seem to help the miles spin by a bit faster.

Earbuds & high volume would be courting disaster, but earbuds at very-low volume is no less safe than putting the speakers anywhere else on the bike and turning the music up until it sounded just as loud.
