Do you enjoy riding mountain passes as much as I do and
are wondering when are the passes around Mt. Rainier going to be clear with all the snow
this year? Here is an update from WSDOT and Mt. Rainer:

SR410: Updated April 24, 2008 http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/Traffic/Passes/Chinook/
SR 410 (Chinook Pass) and SR 123 (Cayuse Pass) Closed Until Spring.
More snow and cold temperatures were encountered this week. Monday
brought a little break in the weather in the afternoon. We are about a
half mile further up the road than last week and are in the deepest
and steepest avalanche section for the next half mile. The target
date of reopening both passes is May 22, 2008. Here are some photos of their efforts:

Mt. Rainer National Park reports --
White River Road to Campground Tentative opening date: 5-24-08.
Sunrise Road Tentative opening: 6-28-08.

I may have to take a ride up to the gate and beyond to see how they're progressing.

Chinook Pass, fathers day weekend 2006. Four days of bike/ski camping. Looking for a repeat this June.

thx for the link!

i hope to do the Three Pass 400k (http://www.seattlerandonneur.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=238&Itemid=26) with SiR on the 17th, and there's talk of rescheduling if Blewitt Pass isn't clear enough.

question: if WADOT says a pass is "open," does that necessarily mean it's a good idea to cycle up it? can you tell from looking at the cameras? i see lots of snow on the side of the roads, so i'm wondering about the shoulders up a mtn-heights.

I think you are generally safe but it may be questionable in the shadow areas where the snow is melting slower. If you have questions or are concerned about it, I might suggest a pre-Blewett ride starting from the SR97 & SR2 intersection. This will allow you to drive it on the way over to see about shoulder conditions. Just a thought if you want to be sure of conditions.

Ok Mike, that's pretty sweet. I've never tried to haul my skis on my bike :-)
