Just got a new bike, and have the urge to tear up the roads, but think a backwards fall into a flower bed has cracked my tailbone. I've been through this a number of years ago, and it took about a year to heal.

I've read this type of injury can be caused by being overweight which I am so do I let my bike sit in the garage, hoof it on foot, and cry or do I sit on a coccyx cushion at home, and ride the bike anyway?:D

Yeah, yeah, I know a doctor would tell me to stay off the bike, but for how long?

Anyone know if I'm risking permanent injury by riding? And how high the risk of permanent injury is?

I cracked my tail bone years ago (was doing a long jump in college and landed on a rock in the long jump pit). Dr. and the physical therapist said to just not irritate it by sitting or putting direct pressure on it (had to sit on a donut type seat for folks with roids) and no running, biking, etc...

took about 6-8 weeks to heal and was not completely healed for about 6 months. if you ride or put pressure on it right away, you will only worsen the injury and healy will be delayed.

Just stay off the bike for now and wait a month then try it. if painful, the give up for anoth month and try again.

I'd check with the doctor.

Sometimes the truth is the last thing I want to hear, and this is one of those times.
I was riding a bike that didn't fit me, and just got a bike that really works for me. It's less than a week old, no make that less than a half a week old. This really hurts, and I'm not talking about my tailbone.

The pure joy of riding a bike that fits is, well it's just so hard to have to let it sit in the garage.

I'm thinking this time, the tailbone problem could just be one that's slipping in and out of place (what's known as a subluxating coccyx) as sometimes there's no pain at all. So it's intermittent, and only occurs when rising from a sitting position.

I do hear ya, guys. The truth sucks.

I can sympathize.....

I just had gotten my Allez and immediately crashed on my mountain bike and screwed up my rotator cuff. (Fortunately, no surgery!), and immediately after that had another rather graphic medical issue (Some of you will remember this.....from my posts from the hospital under the influence of Morphine!), come up....or should I say, out? As a result, I didn't get to ride my new bike more than once until Spring Break!

If you don't aggravate the injury and follow the Dr instructions, you'll be riding sooner and longer. ;) Sometimes the truth is the last thing I want to hear, and this is one of those times.

I am off the bike, off the kayak, so looks like I'll be doing some swimming. Rats!

Tom, I hear ya loud and clear. I know the drill so don't think I'll bother with seeing a doc this time. I'm just going to stay off the bike. Waaaaaa.
