Foo - Need Foo help. Annoying car floor carpetting..

You know the one that lines the floorboards of your car. Its some kinda fibrous fabric that grabs to grains of sand, dried grass etc and is PITA to clean. Vaccuming doesnt seem to get it out because of the death grip that the fabric seems to have on sand. If you brush it the grains of sand go helter skelter and disperse off to other places, only to grab on to the fabric again :fight:..

Unless you manually run it over with a brush and vacuum in close proximity, I cant see how I can get all the sand out. I do have all weather mats but stuff still finds its way to the exposed areas. Any suggestions as to how to go about it?

If you can't get it by vacuuming, it's way too much trouble to spend time on. Leave it dirty.

Get a more powerful vacuum and use agressive short, brisk strokes. Household vac is not good for this. I use my shopvac and the attachment with the smallest opening. It looks like an oversized crevice tool.

You can use compressed air, but you are probably gonna do damage to the fibers by blowing those abrasive bits of grit out. This according to the mechanics in the shop at the boat dealership I used to work at. They reccomended against using air guns to clean out floor mats.

i ripped all the carpet out of my car.

I'd do one of 2 things. Either get a powerful shop vac, or get rubber floor mats.

Car mats on top of car mats. Or drive without shoes like I sometimes do. Shorty is cleeeeeeeeeeen inside. :)

Embrace rat-rod-dom. Paint the car flat black and don't ever darken its doorstep with cleaning implements again.

Shop Vac. I used to work for a shop that vacuumed and cleaned the windows on every car that got an oil change. If you stick with it, a shop vac will get the stuff out of the carpet.

Mini Vans were always the worst.

Depending on the age of the car and your budget, you might find it economical to just replace the carpet. Replacement carpet is relatively inexpensive and comes pre-cut to your specific car. Do a search (I did and below is an example of what I found):

Cover the floor with Chia seeds and water.

You'll have a beautiful green carpet, and dirt will provide further nutrients.

Somewhere around here I have something like this (http://www.amazon.com/Riccar-Handheld-Brush-Standard-Cleaners/dp/B00106EBG2/ref=sr_1_24?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1209439339&sr=1-24) that works fairly well for getting the deep set dirt out of car upholstery. You can usually find them at the local hardware store as some kind of a vacuum hose powered brush attachment. Short of that, try a small handheld that has brushes in the head.

I use the vacs at the car washes myself in lieu of a shop vac. Those get most anything out, from the silt and stuff from mud, on up.

If its *really* grungy, it goes to a car wash place for a seat shampoo, but the last time I've done that was on my last car with cloth seats which had a a beer bottle explode on it.

Thanks folks.. MBP the car is 2 years old and I do use all weather rubber mats on the carpeting. Stuff still is visible.. As for the seats, they be leather so no prob with cleaning those..

I think a shop vac/car wash vac is in order.

If you are a home owner, a shop vac is a good investment. They can be used with a squeegee attachment to dry floors after mopping, sucking up spills. My came in especially useful when tiling the bathrooms. I used it to suck the water out of the toilets prior to pulling them.

To "That Guy" I need to see about using an stepdown adapter to make teh powered brush on the house vac work on my shop vac! Thanks for the post.

Yeah I am an apartment liver :p.. But shop vac might still be useful..
