"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - Bike caps under helmets - front or back?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

For me it depends on the weather. I keep my hair buzzed pretty short, and on cooler race days I like the cap to keep my head a bit warmer. If I put the bill in the front, I find it hard to see, and I can never keep it flipped up. So I usually wear it backwards.
If it's raining, I'll definitely wear it with the bill in front, to help block some of the rain. But it also blocks some of my vision, too, when I'm in the drops. Does anyone else have this issue? How have you resolved it?

I keep my bill flipped down if riding into the sun and keep it flipped up if I just want some breeze forced into my face.

Some caps have brims that are too long or poorly shaped. You just need to find the right one.

I've got the one from the team kit. Not many choices :(

Flipped backwards unless it is raining or I am riding into a rising/setting sun.

Always forward, brim down unless I'm really drilling it and trying to get aero - at which point I may flip the brim up so I can see better tucked down into the drops.
The avatar is an exception to this, as it was pouring rain, and the cap kept it out of my eyes.

Forward, brim down. That way my sweat soaks into and falls off the front of the brim and not down my forehead into my eyes.
Depends on if I'm riding into the sun or not. Riding east in the afternoon, I'm wearing it backwards to keep the sun off my neck.

Always forward, brim down
+1
Only exception is when it is really windy out, the brim starts to flap down in my face and it drives me crazy. If this is the case the hat goes in the jersey pocket. . .

Forward - brim down. I flip it up in the drops on long descents - for vision. Thankfully I don't have to worry about that much around here.

I think front looks best, but front flipped looks the dorkiest. I rock a cap all four ways... It depends mostly on the weather.

Always forward, always brim down.
The key is wearing it with the brim high enough that you can see. The only downside is when you wear it that high you can't ever flip the brim up, but I've found I don't need to.
Example: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v482/carlfreddy/TdStL02.jpg (I'm front-center with the white helmet)
In the drops my sightlines are not affected at all.

This dork seems to think front with the brim.

Rainy days - front, brim down.
Sunny days, training, easy days, no sprints (not even giving into temptation) - front, brim down. You can't see for sh*t with the brim down without craning your head unnaturally upwards.
Sunny days, sprints, temptation is a possibility
or
Racing - I wear a "modified" cap - one with the brim cut out. Do this after you accidentally dry a cap and ruin the brim. Cut the threads holding the brim on. Works great.
Optional cap treatments:
- V-cuts for ventilation
- cut top of cap off (think golf or accounting cap)
All credit goes to my ex-pro friend. He showed me all of these tricks.

Try Pace "Slim Flip Up Visor" caps. They're awesome.

Back, if you want to look like you're wearing a baby beaver's butt (say that 10 times fast).

Keeps the sun off your neck...unless of course you're going for that red neck look. :p

depends on the weather for me. rain means bill in front and dry sunny means bill facing backwards.

Not to steal this thread but, does it matter what logo or team is on the cap? I'm close to not being a Fred and don't want to take a "step backwards". Although this post probably is a step back...

It doesn't matter what the logo is, we will still judge you harshly.
