General Cycling Discussion - Frames?

Hi all,

Gonna buy a frame but what is the general concensus is it to be

Trek
Bianchi
Specialized
Colnago
Pinarello

All thought welcome

What a dumb poll. If you have the money for a Colnago, you sure wouldn't be looking at a Specialized frame.

Ask not which brand you will be happy with....ask which frame material will give you joy.

I don't think would be quite that simple Fixxer, a bianchi steel will ride differently then a colnago steel for example..

Go test ride as many as you can see what you like the best.. personaly I love colnago's.. either that or a merlin cielo.

A lot of different manufactures make frames from the same Columbus tube sets. You can buy an Aluminum Frame made from Columbus Zonal Tubing, triple butted, big swaged downtube, sloping top tube, frame weight just under 3 lbs. Scattante 499.00 Orbea 599.00 and Colnago $1200.00


I think the Scattante is machine made in the Far East
The others are hand made, Colnago in Italy,
Orbea in Spain and for 599.00 you get all paint graphics, no decals, custom paint is a $100.00 upcharge.

I know that a lot of the carbon ones are laid by hand (insert joke here) and so forth, and obviously the manufacturing costs are greater for those. I also am aware of weld quality, paint quality, warranty, etc, made by hand in Italy, vs Made on machine in Taiwan.

But it's still just Aluminum Tubing welded together, albiet some welded and painted better than others.

I'm sorry that I have apparently angered you, his location simply states Herts, so not being from England I had no knowledge of the different localities. I indeed to know that english is the spoken language there, in the future I will try to be more insightful.

Alas, England is rather multicultural. No telling what his first language might be. And besides, everyone knows the Irish had to teach the English how to use their barbaric tounge. It's not like they'd let us speak anything else. ;)

On to the next subject. Naturally, I recommend a Peugeot.

How are you proportioned; longer legs than trunk or vice versa? Different brands of frames, like different brands of jeans for instance, are proportioned differently. Out of several of the brands you mention, Colnago has the shortest top tubes (good if you are long legs/short trunk) and Trek runs somewhat longer.
From what I can tell looking at these frames over the last few years, Colnago will have the best finish quality with Trek right behind, Pinarello lets the scariest looking aluminum welds out into the world, and there seem to be the most happy owners of steel Bianchis and carbon Treks.
