the difference is basically weight and what drive train the chain is designed for... I am not familiar with the shimano numbers (however shimano's website should have the exact differences) however for example sram chains range from pc 49 (7-8 speed I think) to pc 89 (9 speed road/mtb chain)

All I know is, 10 speed Dura Ace has it's own chain, which you can only use for DA 10 speed.

All the model no's you give sounds like 9-speed chains. If so it will be the same difference as for Sora, Tiagra. 105, Ultegra, Dura-Ace etc. Normally the higher numbers the betterquality and with cycling the better quality normally means one thing - LIGHTER!!!!! The lower range chains are "black" whereas the higher end chains are "silver" and does not rust - normally indicating a chrome steel or stainless wich means better quality. Of course the higher numbers are also more expensive. Hope this helps but also look at the Shimano catalogue and speak to your LBS.

Keep those wheels spinning !!!!

Shimano is lacking in any info that might answer my query.......at least that I could find. My new Fuji came with 105 and an CN HG73 chain. Why go to a more expensive chain when I replace?
What this is really all about is that I'm due to replace the chain on my Schwinn MTB. Recorded 1200 miles on the OE chain. I bent the chainring so I'm going to replace both items.....not the cogs. I want the chain to be the weakest link.....to wear faster than the gears. Whipperman's claim to fame is "it's the strongest chain in the industry". If you buy a chain made of different material than OE, what do you sacrifice? I don't think one should move far from what was provided by the OE.......JMHO.
I thought someone here would have an opinion.
