Hi There -

I've been posting on a couple of forums since I'm so excited about my new frameset from Sam Whittingham (Lance Armstrong bought his show bike at NAHBS 2008).

He took some photos and so I wanted to post them for you to see. It's my interpretation of a "club racer". I don't race, but wanted a comfortable bike for longer rides with the option of singlespeed/fixed down the road. The Paul's dropouts with a derailleur hanger makes it versatile. The custom stem and fork add to the classic look.

Cheers

Dave

Got the frame today - spent quite a few hours loosely assembling the parts - I'll do a proper build when I am well-rested!

Nice. I see you are going with black handlebars even though you are using a chrome-colored stem. I may do the same, despite having reservations early on.

Very, very nice. I saw Sam's bikes at NAHBS, including the one Lance bought. They were all drool-worthy.

The handlebars are almost new from another bike. This bike now has black bar tape as well, although I do have a new set of silver bars for it!

Glad you guys like it!

what a coincidence, I talked to sam today for the first time, inquiring about some ss couplers, id never heard of his bikes before, sort of...Last night i stumbled on this post, and not being familiar with naked bikes i thought it, as the first picture would seem to the unreading/unknowing, a thread about frames not yet built up but painted, looked at the pics and close the window...hehe silly me, small world.

I dig the funky rear dropouts. I wonder how hard it is to get a wheel out of there?

Nicely finished bike.

Well, I just got some Chris King headset spacers in green - just need to get around to taking some new photos. I think it's a nice accent... I had the option of getting a threaded headset and quill stem, just felt like a modern touch.

I was just going to ask about this... horizontal dropouts with a derailleur hanger /or hortizontal drop outs on a cross bike... are there any dangers or does the horizontal dropouts allow for better chain tension/safety ?

Nice Bike! The fender mounts appear quite prominent in the photos, are you planning to mount fenders?

I'm starting to design a frame myself that I am planning to have Naked build.

f1junkie
05-31-08, 07:32 PM
At the moment I'm not planning to mount anything yet. I did insist on having them just in case. They don't really stick out when looking at the complete bike.

Thanks for the nice comments.

Thank you! I'm hooked now and I want to restore more bikes. Since I did this at my parents house my moms on my case about not having a helmet when i ride so I grabbed my old helmet and had to paint it to match the bike :thumb: I still have to adjust the seat before my next ride though...

why horizontal drops with a derialer? is that something new? Yeah, brand new technology, never been done before. Will be sweeping the pro ranks; by this time next year I'm sure everyone will be on them.

Keep an eye out for "toe clips" and "straps", as well. Clipless is about to be obsolete!

what tubeset is it built from and what color green is that? i love the look of that frame and the matching stem is the cherry on top!!

f1junkie
07-23-08, 09:34 PM
The tubeset is Columbus Zona, and the green is a PPG colour that I'm sure of the exact code. Thanks for the comments, it's a great bike to ride and to look at!

And yes, the horizontal dropouts are in case I decide to turn the bike into a singlespeed, fixed, or singlespeed cyclocross ride. It has long reach brakes also "just in case"... I like versatility!

Went on a 4 1/2 hour ride - I decided to take some photos with my camera phone to help document why I enjoy waking up early and going out for hours on end...

When I go in the morning I get a nice view of the local scenery... Here's a golf course.

A view of my cockpit for 4 1/2 hours - might as well have a custom stem painted to match, eh?

And some bad pics indoors after my ride - 4 1/2 hours, and a tad over 100km - I was smelling the roses today!

And of course the money shot - I lowered the stem and put the chain on the big ring - I thought the last pic looked a bit 'Freddish'...

I think the color might be Ford's "Dark Highland Green" (code PY or PX). Sam built a road bike for me in late 2007, and after tormenting myself over the 1001+ color combos that can go on a bike, I settled on the same color as my 2001 Mustang Bullitt GT (that I sold to buy a bike hauling car!).
His work is stellar, and I am really pleased with the bike!

why have you attacked the front dropout with an angle grinder and or files?
Was it to fit some special mudguards or racks that would not fit the unaltered dropout?

These are for just in case I win the lottery and spend the rest of my days doing light touring or enter PBP.

the question proposed was not about the attached eyelets for mudguards and or racks.
but why the mess?
did you you attack the front dropouts with a cold chisel and angle grinder?
to fit some thing special
I just do not understand......................

Sorry 'bout that -

This is how they came - I believe another eyelet had to be brazed onto the original fork tip. That and also the stainless steel had to be polished. I personally don't think it looks a mess...

I think what silverbraze is referring to is the area where the dropout face appears to have been partially ground away:

http://os2.dhs.org/~john/IMG_6051_12_1-2.jpg

You can add additional eyelets without that effect:

Does anyone know what drops those are? They must be plug style since they are stainless. It appears that the eyelets are part of the casting. Most Naked bikes I've seen pictures have meticulous drops, I wonder what the story was here.
