I like all the little beasties, but prefer dogs. I like a relationship where I feel sure it is mutual.

Perhaps we need some responses here from those who like cats vs. those who like dogs as to the success of their marriages?

Personally, neither my wife nor I would ever have a dog or a cat, and our marriage is fine.

I don't mind a dog for about 5 minutes, and they absolutely LOVE me. As for cats, some are ok, but most not.

Like cats, tolerate dogs, not married.

So what does that mean?

Love all critters. Still married to the first wife. But on full moons she makes me sleep in the car.

So what does that mean?

Detest cats, can tolerate dogs to an extent but wouldn't want to own one, and Mrs. Catweazle feels exactly the same way.

I guess that means 'harmony' in one aspect of the relationship, at least! :D

Two cats, one my shop "helper" and one dog. Never have my wife and I been without at least one each cat and dog. Kids are grown now. Sorry Catweazle:p, guess we differ here but I would still love to visit Oz and ride with you.

I like dogs, especially Shelties. I'm just not ready for the time and energy one needs right now. Having said that, I also have to consider Jack Russell Terriers as one factor contributing to the end of my marriage.

We also had up to 7 canaries, various rehabbed wild birds and a tarantula. I really liked the canaries and learned a lot about life from them. The rehabbed wild birds were so cool and the tarantula was sooo weird. I think that the birds helped the marriage.

I generally like other people's cats and dogs. I generally like other people's children, too...

I like dogs.
They seem to like me too.
They chase me all the time when I'm on my bike.

We have both. In general I'm a dog person but our cat is pretty cool for a cat. I'm married to my first and last wife.

Love 'em both and have had lots of both! We are down to one elderly cat, whom we love dearly. But we are mutually in agreement that after she goes, we're ready to be petless for a while.

I would vote 'dog', except that Wilfred, the world's best Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, has never considered himself a dog. He thinks of himself as Jeeves (and is emotionally intelligent enough to acknowledge that there might be a few skill gaps where flatulence and food theft are concerned)

It means that you are afraid of dying drunk, single and covered in cat hair...;):D

I must be really flexible on the subject, since I like both dogs and cats, but I'm okay living without either one too. Our dogs got really old (for dogs) and had to be put down; our cats get in fights and put each other down. Such is life.

Now we have one cat (outside only), and that's fine with me.

Also enjoy barking rats, as in the photos in the previous post by Timtruro.

Always had dogs. Allergic to cats (typically takes 2 days to recover after being around them). Wife of 25 years (technically, it's not 25 years till next week) has also always had dogs (although she also had cats prior to our meeting each other).

Love both, but generally less allergic to dogs, so we (married 30 yrs) foster dogs for Adopt-A-Pet and have one of our own. - TF

Currently occupying the same space as Pancho and Lefty - two motherless kitties we rescued 3.5 years ago when they were perhaps 2 months old. Living in a garage. Wouldn't be without them. They came into our lives (wife and I together now for 18 years) shortly after the death of Gris the singing cat, who lived into her late teens. However, the strongest attachment I've ever had to an animal was to Pneuma, my malamute/wolf hybrid. She left us 6 years ago at the age of 18. We had a bond which transcends whatever I fhave felt for any of the cats I've had in my life. Big hearted girl she was.
We've held off getting another dog because we're starting to travel more and planning on some longer trips once I get off of the corporate payroll. However, I know there's another dog in my future.

When cats show you affection, it's so unusual that you lap it up. good marketing ploy on the part of the cat population.

We have a cat that acts like a dog. He comes when you call, plays fetch, always wants to be near you, and bites.

I have a goffins cockatoo. She is a big enough handful without other pets. Besides she would probably consider cats and dogs fit subjects for experimentation.

Lovey and I have a pack of ten Jack Russells. We hunt and trial them together, they are a large part of the fabric of our marriage, which is a bit over 23 years of age now. It is very nice to have that thing that we most like to do outside of our work lives in common. We've always had dogs and I've always hunted with them, I find it remarkable that so many women are into Russells, them being the little hard assed predators that they surely are. I guess it's that deceptively cute look, they can go from zero to sixty in nothing flat, tearing the living hell out of whatever it is they decide needs the living hell torn out of it (even each other now and then). I'd be interested in hearing more about how Russells were a part of a marriage ending, they definitely have the opposite effect on us.

Around here, cats are considered bait, good for sharpening a dog up, not much more.

I thought I would mention I have three cats, all rescued, and the oldest (about 12) was just diagnosed with cancer. It would be possible to operate and to do chemotherapy, but the quality of life was not likely to be good, based on the prognosis, and the doctor wasn't very confident of a cure.

So, instead he is being given prednisone twice a day, and hopefully it will help his body to fight off the cancer as long as possible while enjoying his remaining months.

I had a dream the other night of riding my bike through a neighborhood of cats, and the cats kept biting my elbow. Tinder isn't allowed in my bedroom because he and the other cats don't get along, but when I got up the next morning, and was sitting and watching the morning news, Tinder, as is pretty common got my attention by biting my elbow and reminded me of the dream. :)

He is the only one of my three cats that nips at me to get my attention, and will also bite if he gets over excited... and I think he spends the hours when I am away sharpening his teeth. We also comes when called, and is a companion who will be missed when his time is through.

I have moved twice since I got Tinder, and each time, and when I first got him, he would spend about 20 minutes exploring the surroundings and then he was settled in. My other cats can take a month before they settle in, and if I move a piece of furniture, it takes a week before they realize it isn't a CATastrophe.

I often imagine not having a cat and its disgusting litter box around.

We (married 48 years) like both and currently have an old dog, Sunny, an old cat, Mr Big, and a 1 year old puppy, Peaches. We actually picked out our current cat as a kitten. Prior to that, all of our cats had adopted us, they just showed up and moved in. Our resident tabby cat is in his early teens, comes when called, and was best buddies with my sweet Yellow Lab Cher all her life. They even slept together & groomed each other. He gets along OK with the new puppy, but she is too bouncy for his taste and I doubt they will ever share a bed.

Definitely dogs. In 35 years, my wife and I have had only one cat. Several dogs. Currently have Barklee, a 5 year old cocker spaniel. Best dog I have ever had.

Dogs have owners.
Cats have "staff."

We're animal lovers at heart, and if a kitty needed a home, we'd probably give it one. In our 27 years of married bliss we've owned 5 dogs, maybe a dozen rats (not all at once) and 2 chinchllas. Two dogs and the chins are still with us.
